In the last 24 hours, two new images from director Lars Klevberg's upcoming remake of the 1988 classic CHILD'S PLAY have arrived online, courtesy of two different sources. Both of these images can be seen below.
The first to show up was included in a Los Angeles Times article and shows 13-year-old Andy Barclay (Gabriel Bateman) unwrapping the present his single mother Karen (Aubrey Plaza) has just given to him: Chucky, "an obsolete model of the bestselling Buddi doll with a glitch in his chip and the ability to control a vast network of interconnected devices."
The second image was an Entertainment Weekly exclusive, and it's the creepy one of the two, showing Chucky watching over a sleeping Andy… Although, producer Seth Grahame-Smith says Chucky hasn't switched into evil killer doll mode yet in this scene:
At this point in the movie, at least, Chucky has no ulterior motives. He’s just full of love for his best buddy and dreaming of ways to make him happy. It just happens that this particular toy is not all that it seems."
As noted above, the new iteration of Chucky – which is voiced by Mark Hamill – isn't inhabited by the soul of a serial killer like the original Chucky was, but is instead an A.I. gone wrong. Grahame-Smith discussed the reasoning behind the decision to go in that direction:
It seems like we’re always reading about Alexa spying on people, or smart homes being hacked, and it feels inevitable that in the next five years some big tech company, whether it’s Apple or Google, Amazon, Boston Dynamics — is going to create a smart, connected child companion toy."
Klevberg adds that Hamill's Chucky voice has a "needful childlike quality" to it, as the idea was that this Chucky is
almost like a toddler looking at the world for the very first time."
Co-starring Brian Tyree Henry, Beatrice Kitsos, Ty Consiglio, and Carlease Burke, the new CHILD'S PLAY was produced by Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg through their company KatzSmith Productions.
MGM subsidiary Orion Pictures will be releasing the film through their United Artists Releasing banner on June 21st.
