I have never gotten around to watching the Syfy series Van Helsing, so it's a surprise to me to hear that the title character has gone three seasons, a total of 39 episodes, without ever running into Dracula. Side adventures like 1960's THE BRIDES OF DRACULA aside, for the most part a Van Helsing without Dracula is sort of like Dr. Loomis without Michael Myers. Well, Syfy's Van Helsing will finally be crossing paths with Dracula in the upcoming fourth season, and it has been announced that this Dracula is going to be played by Tricia Helfer, an actress best known for her work on the shows Battlestar Galactica and Lucifer (pictured above).
Starring Kelly Overton as Vanessa Helsing, the series is set in
the near future, where vampires have risen and taken control. Vanessa is humanity's last hope, as her unique blood composition gives her the ability to turn vampires human. With this secret weapon, Vanessa becomes a prime target for the vampires.
Overton's co-stars include Jonathan Scarfe, Christopher Heyerdahl, Neal McDonough, Vincent Gale, Rukiya Bernard, and Aleks Paunovic.
Richard Harmon, Nicole Munoz, Keeya King and the WWE's Paul "Big Show" Wight are also joining the cast for season 4, taking on unspecified roles.
Executive producer Chad Oakes had this to say about the casting of Tricia Helfer:
We are thrilled to welcome the talented Tricia Helfer to our Van Helsing family. She will be a fierce and unstoppable Dark One as the battle between good and evil reaches new heights."
Van Helsing was created by acclaimed playwright/filmmaker Neil LaBute, who served as showrunner on the first three seasons. For season 4, he's handing the reins over to Jonathan Lloyd Walker, who has been in the writers' room since the beginning.
Van Helsing season 4 will premiere on Syfy sometime this fall.
