The New Mutants reshoots are going to happen this year

Things were looking quite promising for director Josh Boone's THE NEW MUTANTS at one point. A horror film set in the world of the X-MEN franchise, the film was heading toward an April 13, 2018 release date and Boone was talking about this being the start of a trilogy that would "examine the horror genre through comic book movies", each film being a different sort of horror film. Then, not long after the marketing for the April '18 release was kicked off with a teaser trailer, 20th Century Fox decided to delay the film almost a full year so it could undergo extensive reshoots that would reportedly add a character and make the movie scarier.

That delay has made the project look like a total mess, especially since Fox has been bought out by Disney while the film has been sitting on the shelf. THE NEW MUTANTS kept being pushed back, and is now scheduled to reach theatres on April 3, 2020. Almost exactly two years after the original release date.

But before we get there, they still have to do the reshoots that should have happened a year ago.

Speaking with Digital Spy, producer Simon Kinberg said 

…we’re gonna do reshoots this year on that film and it has a new release date from Disney. That’s really it. Part of it was figuring out what the reshoots were gonna be, the pick-ups, and the other part of it was getting that cast back together. … It would seem simple on The New Mutants because they’re maybe not as big movie stars as the main X-Men movies, but all of them are on TV shows, so we’ve got to wait until they get off their shows and then they can all be in the same place at the same time. So that will be some time this year, we’ll do our pick-ups and the movie will come out."

The cast that is tough to get back together includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin / Magik: a Russian mutant with sorcery powers, who "uses teleportation discs to travel"; Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane: a Scottish mutant "struggling to reconcile her religious beliefs with her power to turn into a wolf"; Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie / Cannonball: a Kentuckian mutant "who can propel himself into the air and is invulnerable while doing so"; Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa / Sunspot: a Brazilian mutant "with the ability to manipulate solar energy"; Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar / Mirage: a Native American mutant "who has the power to create illusions drawn from the fears and desires of a person's mind"; and Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes: a mentor to the group, and a medical doctor "who has the ability to generate a protective bio-field around herself".

THE NEW MUTANTS has been described as a "haunted house movie" more similar to THE SHINING than the average superhero movie, and the teaser trailer brought to mind A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS.

The story follows 

a diverse cadre of teens learning to cope with their superpowers. These new mutants find themselves held in a secret facility against their will and must battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past.

Hopefully the reshoots will go smoothly and THE NEW MUTANTS will turn out to be a decent movie when it reaches screens next year.
