HEREDITARY writer/director Ari Aster's new film MIDSOMMAR was recently screened for critics, and those screenings were followed by a steady stream of very positive reactions on Twitter. The film was described in various ways: "deeply unsettling", "wicked", "absolutely delightful", "unpleasant", "beautiful", "unsettling", "masterful", "what the f*ck"… but the most unexpected reactions were the ones that said it was "very funny", "wickedly funny", and "hilarious". People kept mentioning how funny it was, and I didn't think this was going to be a funny movie.
A new trailer has now been released online and is embedded below. With this one, the marketing team played up the film's sense of humor to let potential viewers know that this isn't just going to be a messed up nightmare maker, it will also provide some laughs along the way.
MIDSOMMAR deals with "Scandinavian folk horror" and has been described as both an "apocalyptic breakup" movie and "Wizard of Oz for perverts". Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor star as
a couple that travels to Sweden to visit their friend's rural hometown for its fabled mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.
Also in the cast are Will Poulter, Vilhem Blomgren, William Jackson Harper, Ellora Torchia, and Archie Madekwe.
MIDSOMMAR reaches theatres on July 3rd.
