The films in the Riddick franchise have never set the box office on fire, in fact only one of the three theatrically released features (there was also a direct-to-video animated short called THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK: DARY FURY) have made more than $100 million worldwide. So it's kind of admirable that writer/director David Twohy and star Vin Diesel remain so dedicated to the franchise and determined to make more sequels.
It all started with the fun creature feature PITCH BLACK, which emboldened Twohy and Diesel to try to turn the series into a sci-fi epic with THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK. When that under-performed (it made $115 million worldwide on a budget of $105 million), they reduced the scale with RIDDICK. Now Twohy is working on the script for a fourth film in the series.
The new project is going by the title RIDDICK 4: FURYA, and Twohy sent a copy of the script – or at least the first act of the script – to Diesel on his birthday, which was July 18th. Diesel shared a look at the cover page of the script in a video posted to his Instagram account.
If you're wondering what the title means, Furya is the home planet of the Riddick character. There's no word on what the story of this new film would be, but Twohy included a tagline on the cover page:
Everyone wants to be a beast, until it's time to do what real beasts do.
We'll keep you updated as more is revealed about RIDDICK 4: FURYA. In the meantime, Diesel is in production on FAST & FURIOUS 9, and sadly there was an accident on the set of that film this week that has left a stuntman with serious injuries.
So far PITCH BLACK remains the only movie in the Riddick series that I really enjoy, but I'm all for Twohy and Diesel making as many sequels as they want.
