Sony Pictures is moving forward with a new live-action MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE film that is set to star Noah Centineo as our hero He-Man,
the alter ego of Prince Adam, who uses the magical Power Sword to transform into a powerful warrior and battle the villainous Skeletor with the help of his allies Teela, Man-at-Arms, Orko and The Sorceress.
But now there's a He-Man project I'm looking forward to much more than that 2021 movie, as it has been announced that Netflix and Kevin Smith are working on a new Masters of the Universe anime series that will serve as a sequel to the original 1983 – 1985 animated series and
will focus on some of the unresolved storylines of the classic '80s show.
The anime series will be titled Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Smith is serving as showrunner on the series and executive producing alongside Rob David, vice president of Mattel Television and writer of the comic book series He-Man: The Eternity War. The series is being produced by Mattel Television, with Powerhouse Animation handling the animation. Powerhouse may be best known for their work on Netflix's Castlevania series.
The show's writers include Eric Carrasco, Tim Sheridan, Diya Mishra, and Marc Bernardin.
Smith had this to say about the project:
I’m Eternia-ly grateful to Mattel TV and Netflix for entrusting me with not only the secrets of Grayskull, but also their entire Universe. In ‘Revelation,’ we pick up right where the classic era left off to tell an epic tale of what may be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor! Brought to life with the most metal character designs Powerhouse Animation can contain in the frame, this is the Masters of the Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid!"
David added:
’Masters of the Universe’ has been a cultural phenomenon for generations, inspiring fans to discover their own power within. Fans of this franchise have been waiting for the continuation of these characters, and Kevin Smith, as a ‘Masters’ superfan himself, is the perfect champion and partner to expand the canon through a dynamic animated series on Netflix."
I'm a Kevin Smith fan who grew up watching the original Masters of the Universe cartoon and collecting the toys, and I was very surprised to hear that those two separate fandoms will be colliding for an anime series. I think the only Masters of the Universe property I've heard Smith talk about previously was the 1987 film starring Dolph Lundgren, but I'm very excited to see what he and his writers come up with for this follow-up to the classic cartoon.
