Hulu’s Ghost Rider series has been scrapped

Ghost Rider Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The version of Ghost Rider that was going to be featured in the Hulu / Marvel Television series is not either of the ones I grew up reading, but I'm still bummed to hear that the series has been scrapped. Deadline reports that Hulu and the team behind Ghost Rider reached a creative impasse that could not be resolved, so the streaming service has decided not to make the show at all.

Details on the creative differences were not revealed.

Gabriel Luna was signed on to play the Robbie Reyes version of Ghost Rider, a role he originated on ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Executive produced by Jeph Loeb, Paul Zbyszewski, and showrunner Stephen Lightfoot, the show would have told the story of a character

consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon. Robbie Reyes lives on the Texas-Mexico border and when he unleashes the Ghost Rider he brings vengeance for the innocents he encounters, but struggles to control the power he wields.

Earlier this month, a casting call was sent out seeking to fill the roles of Watts, Pitt, Jacob, and Donna, a Texas family "haunted by a demon and helped by Ghost Rider." Those characters won't need to be cast now.

Ghost Rider was the #1 hero of my childhood, so I was looking forward to watching this show, even if it did center on this Reyes character that I'm not familiar with (my Ghost Riders are Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch.)

The only silver lining here is that news of the series being abandoned comes at the same time that there have been rumblings of Marvel Cinematic Universe producer Kevin Feige wanting to bring Ghost Rider to the big screen, so at least there's some hope we'll be seeing some iteration the character again soon.

Hulu is still moving forward with the other supernatural Marvel property they have in the works, Helstrom.
