At one time Patrick Dempsey was signed on to star in the cinematic adaptation of the James Patterson and Liza Marklund novel THE POSTCARD KILLINGS (copies of the book can be purchased on Amazon), but by the time the project went into production Jeffrey Dean Morgan was in the lead. Now it has been announced that we'll have our chance to watch Morgan investigate the titular murders in March… although an exact release date has not been revealed.
RLJE Films has acquired the rights to THE POSTCARD KILLINGS and will be giving the film a theatrical release in March. There are four Fridays to choose from that month – the 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th. Which will they choose?
Marklund worked on the screenplay with Andrew Stern, Ellen Furman, and Tove Alsterdal. When Dempsey signed on, and when Morgan was first cast, the movie was going to be directed by Janusz Kaminski. It ended up being directed by Danis Tanovic. The film stars Morgan as
NYPD Detective Jacob Kanon, whose world is thrown into turmoil when he learns his daughter and son-in-law have been brutally murdered in London. When he goes there find out who is responsible he learns similar crimes are being reported across Europe, with each killing accompanied by a postcard sent to a local journalist. Fighting against time, bureaucracy and his own grief, Jacob will do whatever it takes to stop the killings and find justice for his little girl.
Morgan's co-stars include Famke Janssen (who stepped in after Connie Nielsen had to leave the project), Cush Jumbo, Joachim Król, Steven Mackintosh, Denis O'Hare, Naomi Battrick, Ruairi O’Connor, Sallie Harmsen, and Eva Röse.
Mark Ward, RLJE Films' chief acquisitions officer, had this to say about THE POSTCARD KILLINGS:
We’re excited to help bring this high intensity thriller from the page to the big screen. We know James Patterson’s fans are going to love this cinematic re-telling starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan in a truly standout performance."
The film was produced by Good Films Collective and James Patterson Entertainment.
I haven't read the novel, but I'll gladly watch Jeffrey Dean Morgan track down a serial killer.
