UPDATE: Charlize Theron developing The Frighteners series

UPDATE: A source close to Denver and Delilah says that the project is actually no longer in development due to complicated rights issues. Bummer.

Our buddies over at Bloody Disgusting just passed along word that Charlize Theron is developing a series based on Peter Jackson's underrated horror-comedy THE FRIGHTENERS starring Michael J. Fox. Evidently the series has been in development over the past year at Theron's Denver and Delilah Productions (MINDHUNTER) and they are also "exploring the possibilities" of a future film that could be "stripped of humor."

Jackson's original film followed this synopsis:

Once an architect, Frank Bannister now passes himself off as an exorcist of evil spirits. To bolster his facade, he claims his "special" gift is the result of a car accident that killed his wife. But what he does not count on is more people dying in the small town where he lives. As he tries to piece together the supernatural mystery, he falls in love with the wife of one of the victims and deals with a crazy FBI agent.

The film boasts a 63% rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: Boasting top-notch special effects and exuberant direction from Peter Jackson, The Frighteners is visually striking but tonally uneven.

Jackson directed THE FRIGHTENERS from a screenplay he co-wrote with frequent collaborator and wife, Fran Walsh. Jackson also produced with Jamie Selkirk and it starred Michael J. Fox with Trini Alvarado, Peter Dobson, John Astin, Dee Wallace Stone, Jeffrey Combs, and Jake Busey. Danny Elfman provided the score and Universal Pictures released it back on July 19, 1996. BUY IT HERE.
