Jesus, please us, how has no one thought of this before? Today we have word that someone has come up with a movie musical featuring the classic Universal monsters dubbed – gotta love it – MONSTER MASH. Grammy-nominated music video director Matt Stawski is the mind behind the movie. Specifics are still under wraps (natch) but we do know Stawski came up with the idea for the film, which will mark his feature directing debut.

Will Widger (DAMNED, MAGIC THE GATHERING) will pen the script and John Fischer will serve as the film's executive producer with Stawski. Universal’s Senior Vice President of Production Jeyun Munford and Creative Executive Tony Ducret oversee for the studio. Marty Bowen produces.
For those of you out there, like me, that don't know the history of Bobby "Boris" Pickett's titular song, Monster Mash was released in 1962. The single was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart just before Halloween that year and has been a Halloween mainstay favorite ever since.

Pickett was an aspiring actor who sang with a band called the Cordials. One night, Pickett did an imitation of Boris Karloff and the audience loved it, prompting fellow band member Lenny Capizzi to encourage Pickett to do more with the Karloff imitation. Pickett and Capizzi composed "Monster Mash" and recorded it with Gary S. Paxton, pianist Leon Russell, Johnny MacRae, Rickie Page, and Terry Berg, credited as "The Crypt-Kickers".
We'll let you know as soon as we hear more about this new MONSTER MASH musical.
