Nick Groff Investigates.. My Bloody Valentine!

Nick Groff is one of the most respected names in television and beyond when it comes to the paranormal. He has had incredible experiences in some of the most haunted locations in the world. As a friend to Arrow in the Head, we’ve shared some very exciting experiences with Nick including a couple of wild and spooky moments that we’ve managed to capture on camera. Thus, we’ve decided to work with the television host and producer extraordinaire so he can share his knowledge and insight on all things that go bump in the night. With this bi-monthly column, we plan to delve into everything from urban legends to ghostly apparitions, to his take on some of the coolest genre flicks ever. This is Nick Groff Investigates…!

MY BLOODY VALENTINE (The Ballad of Harry Warden)!

What do you think of when February 14th rolls around every year? Are you dreaming of ways to surprise your significant other with flowers and candy? Do you have a special place to enjoy a romantic dinner? Or, like many genre fans, do you begin to get excited about hearing “The Ballad of Harry Warden” once again?  Having a massive love for horror, it’s impossible for me not to get excited about the terrifying miner who is out to exact bloody revenge on a group of folks getting ready to celebrate the romance fueled holiday. This shite is my kinds of celebration. And frankly, I’m in love with both the original 1981 feature film, MY BLOODY VALENTINE directed by George Mihalka, and the terrific 2009 remake from Patrick Lussier.

So cut to a bit of a discussion I was having with Nick about this weeks column. With candy hearts and roses on everyone’s mind, I questioned him about what we could discuss to give this weeks column a little bit of Valentine’s Day love. Funnily enough, without mentioning the films, he brought up the idea of chatting about MY BLOODY VALENTINE. This is why the two of us get along! With that, the idea of what its like to be in an actual abandoned mine shaft went rushing through my head, and so we started to converse about not only the movie, but the super creepy location in which the films take place. I’ve never had the opportunity to explore anything like that, but its something that I’d love to do.

So with that said, let’s let Nick chime in on his own appreciation for the maniac miner and his bloody holiday sweets. As well, Mr. Groff addresses a few haunted locations that would be a perfect place for Harry to explore. So remember, if you happen to be in a mine shaft, and you here the smashing of lightbulbs, you may wanna get the hell out pronto. Here's Mr. Nick Groff's take on two cool flicks, and more!

“Since love is in the air and I am a movie fanatic, I thought I’d bring back an oldie but goodie, My Bloody Valentine! I enjoyed the remake, MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D as many probably didn't, but it was a fun watch. When it first came out, 3D was hitting the market hard with blu-ray quality, so maybe it was good timing. I have investigated mine shafts that were extremely dangerous and thinking back on it, it probably wasn't a good idea. All I could think of was the film The Descent and My Bloody Valentine. 

There’s interesting paranormal activity in mine shafts deep below the ground. I was in Nevada's crazy tunnels climbing further below the surface to investigate claims of phenomena that people have experienced. Only one way to find out is go to the source and try to experience it for myself. Pushing the limits is what I am all about in order to try and document the unexplainable. I am an explorer at heart and like to skate on thin ice at times without getting hurt, and in order to discover something great we have to be risk takers. All of this combined created a perfect real life horror film during my investigation.

Films play pretend based on ideas, but I was actually in a real haunted mine shaft to explore the unknown. Dark tunnels deep below the ground, where no one can hear you scream is terrifying. These were the thoughts going through my mind as I climbed through the claustrophobic tunnels.

Valentine's Day has always been a big part of horror films. Legends like the hook man killing couples making out on “lover’s lane” or other bizarre tales that spike people's interest. It's also a vulnerable place for people to say, that wouldn't happen on this day… and slash! So many films have been molded around the love day. Maybe someone out there was unhappy in a relationship on Valentine's Day so they made a horror film, HA. If you are a movie lover like myself, than you will appreciate some of these great films that light up your late nights!

Remember, whoever you decide to snuggle up against tonight…don't turn out the lights after saying Candyman, make out in a car at the edge of a woods, look under your bed before closing your eyes or go into a haunted mine shaft without a professional spotter on standby with a pickaxe.
