I know the 90s “EXXXTREME” era of comics gets a bad rap among fans. And I get – they were often adolescent masquerading as dark and deep, and were often more concerned with what was “cool” than what was emotionally resonant. But, honestly, that’s what got me into comics as a kid. I loved SPAWN, MAXX, 90s X-MEN, and the DEATH OF SUPERMAN storyline. Not saying any of these hold up (I started reading these in elementary school), but just saying they were a good gateway drug for a burgeoning comic fan like myself.
So it’s no surprise to me that – with a 90s resurgence happening recently – that a few more obscure characters would be getting the spotlight. Especially off the heels of the whole Liefeld Extreme Cinematic Universe-thing.
And the most recent character to be getting the cinematic treatment would be RAZOR, a prototypical hot Goth badass who kills things with sharp things on her wrist.
Here’s the character’s bio, according to The Hollywood Reporter:
Razor is the alter ego of Mitchell, whose police detective father was killed by a local crime lord. Traumatized by his death, she spends time in a mental institution before dedicating her life to getting revenge — unaware that her sister, whom she believes also dead, has become an assassin working for the man responsible for her father’s death.
The character has appeared in a number of comic book series since her debut, including a crossover with James O’Barr’s similar The Crow, and is credited with popularizing the “bad girl” trend of 1990s comics, which saw a slew of anti-hero female characters with a seeming aversion to clothing wherever possible being eagerly embraced by the marketplace.
And it seems Rob Cohen – of THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS and XXX fame – will be directing the project. Here’s what he had to say “I have loved Razor since its first publication. It has operatic themes, female empowerment, revenge, action, a love story, all shrouded in a delicious darkness that fits our time.” which…okay. Hopefully it at least turns out better than the WITCHBLADE series. So suit up in your best goth clothing and get ready for a fun ride.
Meanwhile, Cohen is still looking for distribution at Cannes, so no concrete release date at this time. However, we’ll keep you posted.
