For his feature debut, writer/director Tony D'Aquino decided to make an Australian slasher movie that draws inspiration from classics like HALLOWEEN, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, FRIDAY THE 13TH, THE BURNING, and A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. That's all I needed to know to become interested in checking out D'Aquino's film THE FURIES, but now a trailer has arrived online that makes the movie look like it's going to be a bloody good time, so I'm even more excited to watch it sometime down the line.
The story centers on a woman named Kayla and
her best friend, who are abducted and dumped in the middle of nowhere. Together with six other women, they are unwilling participants in a deadly game. A game that can only have one winner. What will they do to survive?
Usually just one slasher is able to cause a lot of damage in this type of movie, but the women in this film don't have just one slasher to deal with. They're being hunted by a group of eight slashers.
The "deadly game" aspect of this story gives it a sci-fi twist, and has drawn comparisons to THE RUNNING MAN and THE HUNGER GAMES. It also reminds me of a 2001 film I really enjoyed, $LA$HER$. Just move the setting from a Japanese game show studio to the Australian countryside.
THE FURIES is currently making the festival rounds and will be getting a theatrical release in Australia on November 7th. At the end of the trailer it says the movie will be "yours to own on September 16th". I can't find any details on that release at this time, but it's something to keep an eye out for.
