How many of you are not appropriately pumped for ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY? I would be shocked if you're not because this is quite possibly the most anticipated movie event of the year, which is amazing considering everything else that has come out. We've had not one, but two huge hero-on-hero clashes, the return of everyone's favorite fish and BEN-HUR. Okay, maybe not that last one, but if you're giddy levels are not cranked to 11 then I have news for you that regards ROGUE and one of next year's most anticipated flicks: DUNKIRK.
Word round the bonfire is that a seven-minute prologue of Christopher Nolan’s war epic will be screening in front of 70mm IMAX showings of ROGUE ONE. Currently there are only about a dozen theaters around the country that are showing it in this format, so chances are getting tickets will be the hardest thing you’ll ever do…ever. However, there is no official word yet on if the footage will be playing across more IMAX locations, or if it will be confined to the 70mm prints. There is a possibility that both could happen, as both Nolan’s THE DARK KNIGHT and DARK KNIGHT RISES received similar reveals. The former had its footage shown on all IMAX screens (in front of I AM LEGEND), while RISES was shown only on 70mm print versions (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 4). If my money were on the line I would bet the latter situation is more plausible here.
For those in fear they will not be able to see the footage I say do not fret. With the release of the prologue I’d reckon it could mean there’s a new trailer or teaser on the way, which gives us something to look forward to. That or we can hope the footage will spread to other IMAX locations, because that would be the nice thing for the studio to do. But if you’re pushed to your limit you can always perform some OCEAN’S ELEVEN-style heist scenario and steal the footage. I happen to know Scott Caan is available.
DUNKIRK is set for July 21, 2017 with Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh and more, and ROGUE ONE arrives December 16.
