We heard last September that 30 Coins, the HBO horror series created by genre regular Álex de la Iglesia, will be getting a second season, and back in February HBO Max released a quick teaser trailer to confirm that 30 Coins will continue. (You can check out that teaser in the embed above.) Now Deadline has reported the very cool news that Paul Giamatti has joined the cast of the show!
Giamatti is taking on the role of Christian Barbrow, “an American tech and business billionaire, science guru, writer of sci-fi novels, and head of a mysterious brotherhood that counts amongst its members the world’s elite. He is the ultimate disruptor, but nobody knows his true intentions.”
Directed by de la Iglesia from scripts he wrote with Jorge Guerricaechevarria, 30 Coins has the following synopsis:
Father Vergara is an exorcist and ex-convict residing in the small Spanish town of Pedraza, attempting to move on from a troubled past. However, paranormal phenomena start taking place in the town and he will need the help of Paco, the mayor, and Elena, the town’s veterinarian, to figure out a mystery seemingly related to a coin he owns, which might be one of the thirty pieces of silver paid to Judas Iscariot for betraying Jesus and handing him over to the Romans. The three will find themselves caught in the middle of a conspiracy involving the Holy See itself and threatening the world as we know it.
The second season of 30 Coins follows on from the first. Most of the people of Pedraza have lost their minds, confined to a psychiatric hospital. Elena lies in a Madrid hospital bed in a coma; Paco, shattered by remorse, tries to take care of her. As horror grows around them, our group of heroes must face a new enemy.
Like the first season, the second season of 30 Coins will consist of eight episodes. The show stars Eduard Fernández as Vergara, Miguel Ángel Silvestre as Paco, and Megan Montaner as Elena. Najwa Nimri (Money Heist) is also joining the cast for season 2.
30 Coins is executive produced by Steve Matthews, Miguel Salvat, and Antony Root for HBO Max. De la Iglesia and Carolina Bang are executive producers for Pokeepsie Films. The second season is currently filming in Spain, Italy, the US, France, and the UK.
30 Coins season 2 will premiere sometime in 2023. The show will air on HBO in the US and will be available to watch on HBO Max worldwide.
Are you a fan of 30 Coins, and if so, how do you feel about Giamatti joining the cast? I think it’s awesome that he’s going to be on the show and I haven’t even watched any episodes yet. Share your thoughts on 30 Coins and this casting news by leaving a comment below.
