2022 marks the return of Comic-Con – IN PERSON – at the San Diego Convention Center, and once again, JoBlo will be there (for the 20th year!) getting all of the scoops from the biggest and best panels. Keep your eye on the site from Thursday, July 21 to the 25th, with some big scoops (hopefully) coming from Warner Bros and the DCEU, Marvel, and so many more.
Here’s an idea of what you can expect if you’re following our Comic-Con coverage this year.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves : Hall H: Noon – Paramount Pictures is high on John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein’s big-budget adaptation of the iconic RPG. Chris Pine stars alongside IT’s Sophia Lillis, Michelle Rodriguez, Hugh Grant and Regé-Jean Page. Not much is known about this movie yet – I saw a tiny bit of footage at CinemaCon, but Paramount is on a roll these days after Top Gun: Maverick, Scream and The Lost City, and everyone expects this to be a major franchise for them. Given how popular the game is, it seems likely to get people pretty excited at HALL H this year.
1982: Greatest Geek Year Ever: 3pm: Room 5AB– If you’re a geek that came of age in the nineties, you know the name Mark Altman. He once ran a magazine called SciFi Universe, which, for me, was a gateway into all things geek. This was pre-internet. Altman is one of the guys behind 1982: Greatest Geek Year Ever, which examines that legendary year that saw the release of so many seminal “geek” movies, such as Tron, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, E.T: The Extra-Terrestrial, The Thing, Conan the Barbarian and so many more. Our very own JOBLO MOVIE PRODUCTIONS will be one of the executive producers on this project. Check out a teaser clip highlighting MegaForce below:
Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: 10:30am – Hall H: While Amazon has provided us with a few tantalizing glimpses of their biggest series ever, SDCC will likely mark the first time we’re going to get a real idea of what the show is like, with it depicting “the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history.” All eyes will be on Hall H for this one. I feel this is a show many fans are unsure about, but a killer panel with some great footage might help get people hyped for this potential game-changer for Prime Video.
The Walking Dead: 1:30pm – Hall H: It’s hard to believe, but way back in 2010, when The Walking Dead was just getting started on AMC, it was considered a big gamble. Now, it ranks among one of the most successful shows of all time. Go figure! The Walking Dead panels are always a pretty big deal at Hall H, and this is definitely a victory lap for the franchise, with them about to go into the last eight episodes of the series – before transitioning to more spin-offs.
Warner Bros Theatrical: 10am – Hall H: The biggest day at Comic-Con this year kicks off with an exclusive Warner Bros panel promoting Black Adam and Shazam: Fury of the Gods. Dwayne Johnson himself will be on-hand to showcase Black Adam footage, while WB may also take the opportunity to show off some teases from Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, The Flash and Batgirl.
Our predictions: Shazam: Fury of the Gods trailer reveal. I think there’s also a real possibility they’ll show the footage we saw at CinemaCon from The Flash, which contains a reveal of Michael Keaton in Batman mode. Then again, with all of the Ezra Miller controversy, The Flash might be a no-go. They may still use the occasion to do a Keaton as Batman reveal, but they might show footage of him in Batgirl, a much less controversial production.
House of the Dragon: 11:30am – Hall H: The Game of Thrones panels used to be the biggest events at Comic-Con, and HBO seems keen to recapture the magic, with them set to showcase the eagerly anticipated Game of Thrones prequel series, which premieres in less than a month!
Marvel Studios: 4pm – Hall H: Kevin Feige and company make their triumphant return to Hall H with a panel that’s expected to showcase footage from Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and maybe a few more surprises. Some are also expecting Feige could reveal his endgame for Phase 4, which a lot of us think ties heavily into Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania.
Our predictions: The first trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and possibly a teaser for the Guardians of the Galaxy Chrismas Special or the actual film. I also think they may reveal a juicy bit of casting, but it’s too early to say what.
