After causing a stir online with nominations for the 94th annual Academy Awards, Amy Schumer, Regina Hall, and Wanda Sykes will be your hosts for the 2022 Oscars. According to Variety, producer Will Packer has been in meetings for weeks trying to settle on a battle plan for the big show. One setup included a three-act structure, which would highlight a different pair of emcees every hour. Many names were floated for the gig, including Mad Men actor Jon Hamm, who decided not to host this past weekend.
For now, the plan is to formally announce the hosts on Good Morning America on Tuesday. Reps for Schumer, Hall, and Sykes have yet to comment on the situation. However, Schumer did post a career highlight reel to her Instagram slideshow on Sunday, with a mysterious caption that read “Big fun news coming.”
Packer has been saddled with bringing excitement and eyeballs back to the Oscars, which has seen its viewership dwindle in recent years. The idea is that Schumer, Hall, and Sykes will have broad appeal in addition to keeping the laughs coming throughout the celebration.
Schumer has received 12 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, winning in 2015 for outstanding variety sketch series for her hit Comedy Central show Inside Amy Schumer. She also has a new 10-episode Hulu series on the way in 2022 titled Life After Beth.
Regina Hall is beloved for her hilarious (often movie-saving) roles in the Scary Movie franchise. In addition to starring in films like Barbershop: The Next Cut, Girls Trip, and Shaft, Hall can be found lighting up the screen for TV series such as Black Monday and Nine Perfect Strangers.
Last but never least, there’s the legendary comedian Wanda Sykes. In addition to her hilarious stand-up, Sykes is featured in a variety of TV series, including Crank Yankers, Q Force, Tig N’ Seek, and The Other Two. She’s also set to voice the character Frette in 2K’s upcoming video game Tiny TIna’s Wonderlands.
As far as triple threats go, Schumer, Hall, and Sykes certainly are that and more. Each of these talented women is more than capable of bringing laughs while keeping the show on the tracks. Many will see the three-host solution as a bold move after the Oscars went host-less for two consecutive years. I think it’s a brilliant idea. Someone’s got to shake things up, and Schumer, Hall, and Sykes are a good bet to make that happen.
Are you excited the 2022 Oscars are going to have a host(s)?
