X-Men Origins DVDs? Nov. 26, 2007
Source: Lying in the Gutters   by: Dave Davis

The direct-to-DVD flick is the new frontier, with ever-increasing budgets, production values and profit margins (for example, a GET SMART spinoff was shot simultaneously with the feature and will be released to stores when the movie hits theaters). And we know that the WOLVERINE and MAGNETO solo prequels will carry the X-MEN ORIGINS title. Do some addition and what do you get?

Rich Johnston over at the comic column Lying in the Gutters has already worked through the equation: Expect a bunch of similar films. Not only the previously mentioned "Magneto," now "X-Men Origins: Magneto," but a slate of films, including a number of lower budget DVD releases based on geek-favourite characters.

No further info is given, but Johnston is generally on target with his goss. Maybe I'll get my feature based on this sexy blue shapeshifter with the strategically placed scales and physics-fighting breasts.

It does beg the questions of how they'd handle the stories (possibly post X-movie stories with flashbacks?) and whether or not they'll pull from comics or only use the (Fox-licensed) mutants who only appeared in the X-movies... although there aren't many genuinely fascinating characters left to explore. I can't imagine there would be a huge interest in that porcupine guy who hugs people to death.

Who would you want to see?

UPDATE: A cryptic post about Juggernaut over at Joe Carnahan's blog lends credence to this rumor, especially when you consider he's doing a direct-to-DVD prequel to SMOKIN' ACES. Check it RIGHT HERE.

Extra Tidbit: Unless he got plunked into recent script rewrites, you're not gonna see Gambit in Wolverine's solo movie.

GREAT IDEA
Its so funny i was just talking about how it would be smart for them to do this and now they are. I am so happy they aren't putting Gambit in the Wolvie movie, he has no place there! But his own "Orgins" movie would be Great!! Deadpool should be in Wolverine because he is from weapon X, but his own orgins movie would be sick also

X-MEN ORIGINS: THUNDERBIRD..
No, seriously, I would like to see either Deadpool or Nightcrawler get their own DVD, if they're not going to make a Deadpool movie (which could be a groudbreaking comic book movie, I think).

To maximize interest and profits, they should double up on characters. I for one would be hyped by a "X-Men Origins: Cyclops and Havok" flick.

GAMBIT...
... is the most boring & over rated X-man ever, even more than Storm.

Would love to see a Colosus, Illyana, or some of the original New Mutants, which I think should really be the next X-men franchise.

YAWWWN!
What the hell?! I mean seriously , did Gambit give someone herpes or something? He is far more interesting a character with a very deep backstory compared to half the lame-ass characters the movie (especially the third one) had. Whatever.

LAME, LAME, LAME
these movies are so overrated. And, it seems to me that everyone's favorite X-Men character is either Wolvy or Gambit, so why the hell are they continuing to keep Gambit off the big screen? it's like they are laughing in the fans' faces

I can see this happy more and more because less and less people go to the theaters it seems. The only reason for the high revenue each week is because they keep raising prices. I see maybe 2 or 3 movies a month instead of the 10 or more. Too expensive. I will see this because it is a lot cheaper for me.

PLEASE... NO...
This is an awful idea, but if they're actually going to go ahead with it, I say Colossus. The three seconds he was featured in X2 throwing people through a wall was probably the best three seconds of the movie.
