SAN DIEGO COMIC CON 2000
Covering the Comic Con
with all of its movie related events, stars and directors was a heavy
task, but before we present you with the more specific details about our
findings, "pretend" that you came to the Con with us, and
listen in on all of our daily recorded first impressions on what we saw,
heard and overheard:
DAY 1
THE LINEUP
ARROW: Diane, we're in the line-up again, it's pretty fucking long.
We're going from lineup to lineup...
JO: We're almost there.
ARROW: I think JoBlo has something to say…
JO: We're almost there.
ARROW: Almost there baby…later!
THE CROW 3
ARROW: Diane, we just got The Crow Salvation preview tickets, quite happy about
that…
JO: Wow…Is that The Crow preview?
ARROW: No it's the next Highlander flick…Christophe Lambert still doing
it…
ARROW: Just saw the Crow Salvation trailer and I think it looks kickass.
JO: I don't think it looks that great…sorry, JoBlo here.
ARROW: JoBlo ain't diggin' it.
THE
TOXIC AVENGER
ARROW: I just had my picture taken with the Toxic Avenger, I feel a bit guilty about bashing the movie, maybe I'll see it again.
JO: He seemed like a nice guy.
ARROW: Yeah he did, with the mop and everything…nice guy.
KEVIN SMITH
JO: Diane, JoBlo here. We just saw Kevin Smith walk by right us and I felt like an ass. I wanted to stop him but I didn't. Anyway I don't know what to say anymore…
ARROW: The thing is, is that JoBlo wanted to shake the man's hand, take a picture but that's too fanboy,
he thinks...
JO: He's one of my idols.
ARROW: Maybe when we catch him later, we'll get him in a headlock…
JO: Play it by ear…
ARROW: Get him in a headlock, get his autograph.
SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE PANEL
ARROW: Diane, we're at our first panel for "Shadow Of The Vampire". We're waiting for shit to hit the fan…wow, there's a girl in a brown top looking pretty good…but that's just me. We'll be back with comments later.
ARROW: Allright…so man…JoBlo
we just went through our first panel. What do you think dude?
JO: Well, I'm pretty excited, we met a lot of cool people here, a lot of on-liners.
CORONO, CHUD, the FANDOM boys. That's good shit. Talked to the director, real nice guy, soft spoken, took a picture with him. The movie sounds great...everything looks fun. I'm pretty excited, we're off to a good start.
ARROW: I gotta say, the director, love the leather jacket man…Hollywood doesn't always know how to dress but this guy is on the money. Shadow Of The Vampire looks like a keeper, a movie made with
heart…JoBlo and Arrow will be there.
THE BATTLEFIELD EARTH INCIDENT
ARROW: I just passed by their booth and happened to mention that I liked the
movie and…the girl jumped all over me, trying to sell me books and basically crowding me…why am I aroused…where's Travolta when you need him?
THE THONG GIRL
Arrow: I'm following this girl around who's wearing a thong, butt cheeks
flapping in the wind. I want to take a picture of her butt for the
page…but it's quite a challenge cause people are on to me.
THE THONG
GIRL: PART 2
ARROW: I got it…the thong picture has been taken. Where is JoBlo, I can't find the bastard.
REFLECTING OVER BEERS
ARROW: So JoBlo this is it, we're sitting down on a hip terrasse, we're gonna go watch some movies…what are your thoughts on the
first day?
JO: The first day was pretty good, overwhelming is probably the best word. I'm trying to soak most of it in, very good. Saw a lot of people. Kevin Smith kept running into us. I didn't talk to him yet but it's coming. Saw Harry Knowles...seems like a nice guy, met the director of Shadow Of The
Vampire, saw all kinds of cool stuff. Andrew Divoff, great man…anyway pretty
cool overall…what about you?
ARROW: Well...
JO: Say what's really on your mind.
ARROW: I had a picture taken with me, JoBlo and the director of Shadow Of The Vampire
and the dude that took the picture forgot to give me my camera back and I forgot to ask
for it cause I was too excited about talking to the director...pretty fucking pissed about that. On the up side, ignoring Lou Ferrigno is always fun
and Andrew Divoff was a very cool guy. We know each other from the interview I did with him for the page,
but it was nice to meet him in person, he signed his new comic for us, took pictures…way cool. Now I'm looking forward to my rhum and coke, my Malbies and my burger.
JO: What about the Troma people?
ARROW: Troma people are very cool, Kaufman knows about showmanship that's fer sure…and look at that girl man! I love Cali…
DAY 2
BRYAN SINGER/X-MEN PANEL
ARROW: Hey Jo, how was the Bryan Singer panel?
JO: Yeah Brian Singer, kickass guy, came jumping in, got a standing O obviously, very fidgety kind of fellow, talking really quick but very cool guy. He was excited about the X-Men movie so was everybody else, he showed us bloopers from the movie, funny stuff, Wolverine showed up not Hugh Jackman but a guy that looks exactly like him, fun times…
ARROW: Wait man, didn't Wolvie tell you that he would stick his claws up your ass?
JO: Sort of, at one point I wanted to take a pic with Wolverine and asked him if he could put his claws on my neck…he told me to bend over and he would stick em up my ass…
ARROW: Great man…
JO: I said " no thanks", but thinking back...maybe I shoulda
tried it! Anyways, Brian Singer cool guy, X-Men…can't wait for the sequels.
ARROW: I came in half way through the panel and found Singer to be very witty and funny. The man is full of life. I'm a bit pissed I didn't get his autograph but…c'est la vie.
CROW SALVATION PANEL
ARROW: We just got out of the Crow Salvation panel, what did you think Jo?
JO: Euh…semi interesting, looked like the producer was trying to sell it to us, Eric
(Mabius) looked like a nice guy, all in all, it was so so, they gave us lots of info…I think you enjoyed it more than I did.
ARROW: Yeah I did, I loved Salvation, I think it should be seen on the big screen to be appreciated totally, I hope it gets a full release. Actually I might appear on the DVD box set, the Dimension people took me aside and filmed me talking about The Crow cause I was one of the strongest supporters in the audience. I showed
them my Crow tattoo and talked about what The Crow means to me.
I also got Eric Mabius' autograph downstairs, we talked a bit, very cool guy, down to earth, very focused. I hope for his
sake that the film gets a theatrical release, his performance is incredible. Crow 3 panel is probably the highlight of my day.
KANE HODDER
("JASON" from FRIDAY THE 13TH flicks)
ARROW: Hey Diane, I just met the man behind the machete face to face…Kane Hodder aka Jason Voorhees…The dude is huge!!! Like 7 feet tall or something. Anyways, I got an autograph, he choked me for a picture and told me he'd see me in hell. He comes across as a real tough guy…now I know why they cast him. I wouldn't fuck with him…
ROGER CHRISTIAN (Director of BATTLEFIELD EARTH)
JO: Hey Diane, we just met Roger Christian…stand up guy…actually knew about
JoBlo.
ARROW: Everybody knew about JoBlo at that panel!
JO: Anyways, we took pictures with the guy, got his autograph and talked about the movie a bit.
ARROW: They might still be doing a sequel actually. Since the original was
independently financed, the sequel would be too. Christian and Travolta are talking about it and it looks like
it might still happen, believe it or not. Actually JoBlo and I are two of the few net boys that liked BE, hopefully with its release on video it will gain the rep of:
"The worst film that wasn't that bad". I actually want a sequel and for all of you who will send me hate mail due to this
comment…well, f--- you!
JO: Play nice...
ARROW: Another thing that I noticed was that the people working at the BE booth were a bit too nice and too clingy for my taste. Trying way too hard to sell BE books and all. Hopefully next year they'll back down a bit. It's the only booth where I
actually felt attacked. Another note I'd like to add is that the girls that worked there, turned me on big time for some reason…
Anyways…something weird was going on there. And why do I have the sudden urge to
return to that booth? What's happening to me?!?
ALONE ON
TERRACE
ARROW: I'm outside right now, typing away, looking out at San Diego from the
terrace. The city is beautiful, I could see the ocean. The weather is so-so but that girl passing by me right now has a yummy
behind. San Diego is ok in my book. Now where the fuck is JoBlo?
SUPER HEROES
JO: Hey Diane, I'm basically at the panel here with Harry Knowles, Roger Avary,
screenwriter of X-Men, screenwriter of Iron Giant, talking about super heroes movies how they've been affected by the
X-Men success. It's semi interesting…lots of the talking was by Harry Knowles…most of the stuff was cool but I would have liked to see more interaction with the rest of the panel. Mostly talking about how studio
execs don't know shit about comic books and how they should pay more attention to the real elements from comics that work instead of the bottom line. I agree…but
overall, a so-so panel.
AUTOGRAPH SECTION
ARROW: Hey Diane I'm upstairs at the autograph section. Denise Duff is here, Richard Lynch, Brian Thomson of "in my book" COBRA fame, Reggie Banister of Phantasm fame and even Uncle Owen from the first Star Wars. It's all good…I must say that I don't think
it's cool for some of them to be charging 20 bucks to get a pic so you can get that autograph…kind of mercenary. But it's nice to see all these stars. The line between fan and journalist is thin indeed…fuck it…I'm both.
PAUL VERHOEVEN/HOLLOW MAN
ARROW: Hey Diane, just came out of the Paul Verhoeven panel. A great man. Why?
How about: Robocop, Total Recall, Starship Troopers and Showgirls (with a box of Kleenex
it's fun!). The man's got great hair for his age and Hollow Man looks kick ass.
JO: He's Dutch like me…I was born in Holland…really interesting guy to watch, he's very passionate, he gestures a lot, he's really into his movies, he likes the violence, he likes the sex…nothing wrong with that, he's got a strong
Dutch accent and it works.
ARROW: It works?
JO: Yeah, it works.
ARROW: Why not!
JO: They showed us a behind the scene featurette of Hollow Man, looks slick with crazy
effects. We also got in line and met the man, got his autograph and some pics.
I also agree with the Arrow in that the man has got a great set of hair!
ARROW: My take on the man is
a simple look at his movies: all excessive, sexual, extremely violent, in your face. That's the kind of guy he is. For example if he liked big tits he wouldn't be shy to tell you. He'd just stare at you and blurt out: I like big tits.
JO: Tell them about the question you asked him.
ARROW: The question…oh yeah…I asked him if Hollow Man is as gory/bloody as his previous films. He answered with a confident
YES as a smile graced my face and my Hollow Man ticket was bought
instantly.
DAY 3
Diane was out getting her hair done. Here's a conversation between
JoBlo and I, covering the day.
HARRY
KNOWLES/MOVIE WEBSITES
ARROW: Allright, let's shoot the shit. Day 3, where did you go this morning?
JO: I was at the "movie websites" versus Harry Knowles panel.
It was kinda strange really. Started off okay, but before you know it,
it was everyone vs Harry. I personally don't know all the details of the
goings-on between the sites, but one thing is fer sure, there is no love
lost between them.
In the end, it just
seemed like all the different sites were just that: different! Didn't
seem to resolve anything, but definitely better than emailing one
another back and forth, that's fer sure. Also, nice to put a face to a
name.
KEVIN
SMITH PANEL
ARROW: And what about the Kevin Smith panel, I caught the
last half. He's a funny guy.
JO: Honestly...straight up, he's one of the funniest guy I have ever seen.
ARROW: That blow job joke with the guy in the audience was hilarious…
JO: He's just a cool dude, I don't know how else to say it. In fact,
believe it or not, I would say that he's even funnier in real life than
his movies.
ARROW: That CLERKS cartoon
that they showed was pretty good actually.
JO: Yeah, my brother taped the first episode of the show for me and I
thought it was only so-so. This one was all about very funny jokes, Matrix
homages…pretty cool! What did you do all that time?
ARROW: Had to go through the line-ups again today cause I forgot my fucking
pass. Anyways, I was pretty pissed off about that and have a pretty bad day actually. Saw a few stars here and
there…dicked around, since you had the camera I couldn't do much. I went to buy some smokes.
Every time I went to a panel I couldn't find you
JO: Pretty big panels today, Kevin Smith, Chris Carter.
CHRIS
CARTER/X-FILES
ARROW: I missed Chris Carter…wassup with that?
JO: This girl asked him what was up with Mulder for the next season? Carter
replied "he's probably out investing his money"…ouch…
ARROW: So is he gonna be on the show?
JO: He's apparently gonna be on the first episode but he was pretty
vague after that. I didn't really like his answers. He was being vague
and ambiguous.
ARROW: That means that he might either be on the first show only, or the
first and last.
JO: Robert Patrick was hired apparently.
ARROW: Oh yeah! Great choice!
JO: Patrick is supposed to be some kind of a new agent working with Scully. But this time he's the sceptic and she's the believer because she knows Mulder has been abducted by aliens.
ARROW: Cool, I'm a big Robert Patrick fan…hey look, it's Vincent Donofrio having a smoke looking like a man. I wouldn't mind getting a pic with the dude…Full Metal Jacket man…
JO: Yeah…
THE CELL/
VINCENT D'ONOFRIO / LORD OF THE RINGS
ARROW: Other than that, we just saw preview for The Cell, Lost
Souls…actually Lost Souls got a pretty underwhelming response.
JO: Deservedly so…
ARROW: I thought it looked pretty good!
JO: Really? I thought it looked awful. It looked generic. Just a bunch of stylish shots…
ARROW: It's a trailer man…it's supposed to entice you...
JO: It didn't entice me…
ARROW: Well, I'm hip to it…
JO: The Cell…
ARROW: Looks interesting, artsy fartsy horror…
JO: Salvador Dali…
ARROW: …with a bit of Nightmare On Elm Street and Silence Of The Lambs. I'm gonna see it fer sure, it looks original…
JO: It looks like a painting…
ARROW: I don't know about the Jennifer Lopez casting.
JO: Dunno.
ARROW: Not because she's a bad actress but because she's a movie star. I think it would have served the film if they got someone with less clout, an unknown even. Someone more neutral.
Vince Vaughn, it's nice to see that mother fucker again…
JO: With messy hair…
ARROW: Messy hair, a 5 o'clock shadow, smoking malbies…hey…I'm there.
JO: What did you think of Lord Of The Rings?
ARROW: I'll see it but I will admit that it doesn't do anything for me. You?
JO: I must be one of the
only saps out there who hasn't read the books, but fantasy fiction never
"did it" for me. The featurette showed some decent special
effects and it will definitely be a major epic, but for me...not much.
ARROW: I liked the surprise appearance by Sir Ian McKellen. He talked to the crowd a bit, being the gentleman he always is.
JO: This guy is just the coolest. He's a bit old but he's hipper than
many of the younger stars of the day. He's got his own website, on which
he posts stuff all the time. Shows up at the Con JUST to thank his fans!
One class act.
ARROW: Allright, time for some fun!
JO: Yeah, a lot of people are dressed up today, pretty cool.
ARROW: Let's get some pictures with D'Onofrio and grab some chow...
