Robocop is a go! Jul. 24, 2008
Source: MGM
by: JoBlo

We mentioned this news to you all "in passing" a couple of weeks ago, mostly because we too weren't sure about what exactly it entailed and whether or not it was bullshit, but MGM made it official today, hiring THE FOUNTAIN and REQUIEM FOR A DREAM director Darren Aronofsky to direct a new installment for its ROBOCOP franchise. Note the words new installment and not necessarily a "remake", "sequel" or "prequel". Writing the project is David Self, the screenwriter of such films as 13 DAYS, ROAD TO PERDITION and the upcoming WOLF MAN. I'm generally not hip to anyone messing with classic films, but at least this is sounding like these guys are gonna add a fresh perspective to the franchise, and with Aronofsky behind the reigns, I'm actually pretty f*ckin' stoked about it. The film is set for release sometime in 2010 and no specific information was given about its plotline or possible casting just yet. The original ROBOCOP is one of my favorite movies of all-time and features a ton of quotable lines including "Dead or alive, you're coming with me", "Bitches leave!" (classic), "I'd buy that for a dollar" and many many others. Looking forward to following this one's development. What think you all?

Extra Tidbit: Not only can Darren Aronofsky direct the shit out of me, he also attended Harvard University and has a child with actress Rachel Weisz. He probably knows HTML better than me too...sigh...

NO REMAKE
as long as this is another installment, and not a REMAKE of the original, then I'm in. Great character with shoddy sequels, there are plenty of stories to tell. Just don't remake the great original.

COULD GO EITHER WAY
The original Robocop is a goddamn 80s action classic, and the amount of excess it indulges in makes it a kick-arse to watch while you get drunk with some mates. Vintage Verhoeven.

Given the outcome of parts 2 and 3, I'd be reluctant to see a new flick, but having Aronofsky on board gives me a bit of confidence.

His biggest challenge will be creating a villain who outshines Clarence Boddicker... No easy task.

THEY ALREADY SCREWED IT UP
with parts 2 and 3. so i wasn't surprised when they announced a new film.

but now that darren is on it, i'm really, really excited to see this. he's definitely one of the most talented directors around right now in my opinion. i know he has the chops to make this a classic!

I'm thinking this will be cool - Aranofsky is a brilliant director. But is he really known for doing anything violent? Granted there were a couple brief moments in The Fountain but it wasn't quite Verhoeven levels of blood...
