SHOULD BE INTERESTING
I suppose I should clarify my stance on the Star Wars feuds. I absolutely love the Original trilogy--even the Ewoks, although that's mostly because my older sisters liked them so much--and it played an enormous role in how I view movies today. However, the prequel trilogy was, in retrospect, a real disappointment. I initially enjoyed each episode, but as time went by, I realized how disappointing they were. Now, I largely prefer the Expanded Universe, not only b/c it's more interesting (particularly the Dark Horse LEGACY comic series) but also b/c it's free of Lucas' meddling. While he has every right to make his movies the way he wants them, he should also have to accept the criticism they receive. He complains about how critics have despised all of his movies except for American Graffiti. Not true: A NEW HOPE has a sterling Metacritic ranking of 91 and EMPIRE STRIKES BACK has a solid 78 (should be a 98 IMO) so that is patently false.
Thankfully, Spielberg lacks that kind of arrogance and is willing to take his lumps. That's probably part of the reason why his movies are so good (besides his eye for talent and gift for directing). |

"THE LAST STRAW"?
Why shouldn't fans complain about the DVD transfers of the original Star Wars trilogy (that is, NOT the "Special Editions")...they were, in a word, appalling (which says a lot about the disdain, if not outright hostility, that Lucas has towards the fans and films that made him a success in the first place). |

@yodalovesyou: You obviously jerk off to a George Lucas poster on your bedroom wall, so fuck off yourself. You probably rape a Jar Jar Binks stuffed toy every night, too. |

PATHETIC!
Lucas shouldn't give his 'fans' any respect because they have done nothing but criticise every single thing he has done since 1983. The last straw was when he finally bowed to the pressure of releasing the original, original trilogy on DVD and they started whining about the transfer or some pathetic crap like that. You're all losers. I hope you all die. Now fuck off!

im hip to this news because i hate lucas and i dont really care for star wars
i think lucas is a horrible filmmaker and im convinced he stole the star wars concept from someone else and made it his own and he got lucky that the star wars universe became so popular after the first movie and he capilatized on it
everything he was conceptually responsible for was pure shit (ex: Howard the Duck) and the fact that he insisted to write the scripts and to direct the 2nd star wars trilogy is ridiculous and proves hes greedy
hes a hack and he doesnt deserve to have so so many people who like star wars and shell money for that shit
spielberg is a true director, lucas is nothing

...and don't even get me started on the fact that the original Star Wars trilogy has, retroactively, lost A LOT of its mystique now that I know that Anakin's laughably abrupt turn to the Dark Side had less to do with some tragic fall from grace, and more to do with some whiny, inarticulate kid's paranoia (possibly insomnia induced) about being dis'ed by his superiors.
Grrr. Argh.

This will be interesting especially after all the bullshit Lucas has been spewing about how much he hates his fans (!?!?!?!) lately. The man's become such a douchebag, even Spielberg thinks so. |

Give the man below me a cigar! I had absolutely no faith that either AOTC or ROTS would be anything more than a dagger in my heart after the abomination of TPM. I underestimated it completely. It was like when Paul Sheldon was strapped in bed and Annie Wilkes smashed his ankles with a sledge hammer. Wookies with Tarzan screams...really? REALLY?! Rot in Hell Lucas. |

Lucas is always going on about how people's negative reactions to Episodes I to III are due, largely, to their own sky-high expectations.
Not so.
In fact, quite the opposite. These movies were a crushing disappointment to me even though I went to each expecting the absolute WORST.
Why did I expect the worst? Well, as far as I'm concerned, Lucas hasn't been involved in the production of a decent movie since '81.
Let's face it, "A Very Muppet Star Wars" (or, Episode VI) was, at best, just Episode IV remade (another Death Star?!?) as a Muppet Movie...and was, at worst, just an overlong excuse to sell toys (how else to explain why seemingly every other person on the face of the planet knows what an Ewok is, despite the fact that the word itself is never ONCE uttered in the actual movie?).
And I didn't like either of the Indiana Jones sequels. Sorry, not even "The Last Crusade." Seriously, remove Connery and what do you have? A bland girlie? An unmemorable baddie? Sallah and Brody reduced to bumbling caricatures of their former selves? A finale (with the comic-relief knight) that seems to be a deleted scene from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"?
And I positively loathed the "Special Editions" of IV, V and VI. (It's like airbrushing eyebrows onto the Mona Lisa; the additions may be, technically, correct...but the mediums, and artistry, don't match.)
So, yeah, I went to see "Phantom Menace" with the lowest expectations imaginable...and I was STILL disappointed. Shit jokes? Fart jokes? The Force reduced to being some sort of fungus of the blood? Hell, even the wonkiest fan-fictions couldn't've come up with anything THAT stupid.
And, yes, I'll be approaching "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" with cold dread in my heart 'cause, like Kevin Bacon in "Animal House," I just keep stupidly bending over and saying, "Thank you, Sir! May I have another?"
Sigh. |
