Parnassus lives? Jan. 29, 2008
Source: People   by: Omar Aviles

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus In the wake of Heath Ledger's shocking passing, it seemed as if Terry Gilliam would be forced to shut down work on his fantasy adventure THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS, in which Ledger was starring. There was some hope recently that it wouldn't be shut down when a rumor started circulating that seeing as how the film contains fantastical and magical elements, Ledger's work could remain in tact and simply be turned into another actor - in this case, JoBlo.com man-crush Johnny Depp. Now comes confirmation from Christopher Plummer, who plays the titular doctor, that Gilliam is indeed working frantically to find a way to finish the film, if only as a way to honor Ledger's final work. Says Plummer, "…[Gilliam is] trying to work out at this moment how to continue on. Fortunately, because the film deals with magic, there is a way, perhaps, of turning Heath into other people and then, using stills and I think they call it CGI…Terry was a very good friend [of Heath's]. He very wants to go on with the movie, and I can very much understand why. Because he wants to dedicate it to Heath, of course." Read the rest of what Plummer had to say over HERE.

Extra Tidbit: The film also stars Tom Waits, Lily Cole and Verne Troyer.

I would much rather they use more than one actor so it doesnt feel like "oh hey they brought in johnny cause heath died" it would be a tad distracting that way...bring in other people aswell

While watching "The Brothers Grimm" I kept thinking that: [A] the movie would've been 1,000 times better if the studio had just left Gilliam alone; and [B] that Ledger, more than most actors, really seemed to "get" Gilliam.

Which, of course, makes his passing sadder still.

Damn. Damn, damn, damn.

Anyway, I'm none too keen on the whole CGI idea (unless it's just done to discreetly tidy up a few shots, as in "The Crow") and am still of the opinion that it would be nice if someone like Depp could, if possible, assume the other side of Ledger's role.

P.S.

I actually quite liked "Tideland" but, as does Gilliam himself, I can see why it freaks a lot of people out.

GO GILLIAM GO
I had a feeling this movie would be badass when I first heard about it, I really hoped that Gilliam's bad luck with his flicks wouldn't prevent him from doing so. It's been a while since I've had my Gilliam fix and Tideland kind of left me feeling "meh". I was also hoping The Joker wouldn't be the last we'd see of Heath, its an extra bonus we'll get to see him one more time.

MAYBE NOT?
I fully understand Gilliam's reasons for trying to carry on with this...but I'm not so sure how it'll work out. Maybe The Dark Knight would do more justice to Heath as an incredible, chameleon actor, more than The Imaginarium. Of course, it would be awesome to have more movies with the late Mr.Ledger, but there's a better chance of The Dark Knight being a success than The Imaginarium, that's all I'm saying. Gilliam's movie is already somewhat damaged after Heath's passing and I'm afraid it'll turn out more of a mess with all the CGI efforts. Let the Batman flick be Heath's swan song, the man's resume is awesome, and playing the Joker as his final role will only leave him to be remembered as a legend.

As long as they dont go overboard with cgi... but Gilliam is a smart director and obviously a good friend of Ledger's so I'm sure he'll do his best to give a fantastic movie that will do honor to Heath. I'm all for this.

Hmm, I don't know about the CGI. If it looks like Beowulf I'm against it but if they can make it look as realistic as Gollum and Kong then yes. Though, I/we don't know is the CGI-Heath supposed be looking realistic.

The Depp choice would maybe be better. But if he'd stole the last of the movie from Heath, that wouldn't be nice...
