MTV does Rocky Horror Jul. 24, 2008
Source: Variety
by: Mike Sampson

That sounds you just heard was a collective choke as thousands of ROCKY HORROR fans wrapped their fishnets around their necks upon hearing the news that MTV was planning a modernized remake of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. Perhaps a remake of the cult classic could work on some level (perhaps) but I'm pretty sure there's one place it won't work and that's as a TV movie for MTV. Kids who watch MTV today won't get it (these are the same people who keep Lauren Conrad in the collective conscious) and people who remember ROCKY HORROR fondly would surely rather put a high heel through their TV than watch ROCKY HORROR recast with some pop stars. MTV plans to use the original screenplay for their remake (they do get points for that) as well as include some songs that were cut from the original version. No director or cast is attached yet but producer Lou Adler says he'd like to have it premiere in time for Halloween 2009. I for one can't think of anything scarier.

Extra Tidbit: Who could possibly be better than Tim Curry? I don't even like the movie all that much and even I can realize that.

Coming from someone who spent many weekends as a teen dressing up, throwing toast, toliet paper and rice, knew all of the come back lines and just absolutely loved all of the energy and fun that the midnight showings were...........THIS IS A FUCKING HORRIBLE IDEA!!!!

I don't even like the movie and I think this is a bad idea. MTV's track record of turning out total sh*t is more then enough for me to wonder why.

Sticking with the original script garners a shred of respect but wait until they "modernize" the songs. Kanye West doing the Time Warp anyone?!

WHY WHY WHY!?!? Stop fucking with our movies. Remakes were getting tired two years ago. Sure, musicals are kind of the hot thing right now, so why not come up with something original.

It still doesnt make sense to me why people even like the original, personally its on my most-overrated-pieces-of-crap list. All you Rocky fans dont get offended, its just an opinion. The movie never did anything for me, and its not because im close minded and homophobic...Im far from it. I just think if a movie is despised even by its own star (Tim Curry), then there is definently some trendy naustalgic disorder to this cult phenomenon. Just my personal observation, however even I can see that a remake would be horrid, even if I remotely liked the original.

THERE'S ONLY ONE ROCKY!
MTV can't make anything WELL! TV, commercials..no bueno! The closest anyone ever came to the original was the Broadway play - which was awesome. Get that cast to do a feature film and I'm in!

Get one of the broadway guys to do it. Terrence Mann and Tom Hewitt were easily as good as Tim Curry. Raul Esparza for Riff Raff!

Why remake it? "Oh so we can update it into future generations"! Don't give me that fuckin' child raping bullshit! It's already in this current generation due to midnight screenings! You can't make this movie any better than it already is! They tried to recapture the magic with a sequel: "Shock Treatment" in 1981, but that failed horribly because most fans of Rocky Horror didn't like it! (Allthough, I thought Shock Treatment was fantastic!) Bottom line: WHY DOES MTV THINK THEY CAN SUCCEED IN THIS? You can't recapture the magic with a sequel, and you sure as hell can't "update" it for a future generation because it's already IN a future generation! Everyone goes out at midnight on fridays to see the original! That will go on for years to come. A remake will just slowly fade away.
