Universal wants Scarlett Johansson for The Creature from the Black Lagoon

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

As Universal still plots out the next phase of their monster-centric cinematic universe, we have yet to see much progress on THE MUMMY reboot or other projects. With only DRACULA UNTOLD released thus far, the question was when we would learn about a new Wolfman or beyond. Now, it looks like one character left untouched for decades may be on the way.

The Tracking Board reports that Universal is looking to possibly cast Scarlett Johansson in a remake of THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. Indications would have her stepping into the role played by Julia Adams in the 1954 original which has gone on to become an iconic movie image and a template for horror movie heroines ever since. Johansson has played roles in films big and small in recent years and this would be a distinct genre shift for her, but moving the setting to a contemporary setting would afford the opportunity to turn the character from a scream queen to a strong female lead.

THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON remake is set to be produced by Gary Ross from a screenplay penned by Ross, Jeff Blitz, Tedi Sarafian, and Paul Schering. Ross has other films in development but he could be a contender to helm this remake depending on when it happens. Johansson has obligations to the Marvel Cinematic Universe but I am sure she could find some time to make this movie over the next year or so.

The current remake is taking shape at Universal, with Larger Than Life and Strike Entertainment producing. Gary Ross, Robin Bissell, Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will produce, with a screenplay by Jeff Blitz, Gary Ross, Tedi Sarafian and Paul Schering. Leslie Urdang, Jeff Kirschenbaum and Jay Polidoro will oversee development for the studio.
