The Boba Fett standalone Star Wars film is reportedly ‘100% dead’

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

A recent tweet posted by entertainment reporter Erick Weber might have just confirmed that James Mangold's Boba Fett standalone Star Wars spin-off is being tossed into the Sarlacc pit. According to Weber's tweet, Lucas Film president Kathleen Kennedy, after hosting a BLACK PANTHER screening for Ryan Coogler, stated that the project is "100% dead," and that the studio will instead be focusing 100% of their efforts on THE MANDALORIAN, Jon Favreau's Star Wars TV series for Disney's upcoming streaming service.

You can check out Weber's tweet for yourself below:

This past May, just one day shy of the release of Ron Howard's SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, it was confirmed that Mangold would write and direct the Boba Fett project. Unfortunately for the Star Wars universe, Solo under-performed at the box office (when compared to other Star Wars-related releases), sending a shockwave of doubt throughout the suits of Star Wars Central. One could argue that the Boba Fett news was prematurely announced, as the project did not appear to make it very far in the planning process before going the way of the Empire's first Death Star.

Thankfully, there are still plenty of Star Wars-related projects in the hopper, what with J.J. Abrams continuing his work on STAR WARS: EPISODE IX, in addition to Rian Johnson's proposed Star Wars trilogy. Oh, and let's not forget that GAME OF THRONES showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are also expected to create another Star Wars endeavor on the big screen as well. So yeah, while it sucks to have lost the Boba Fett standalone movie, fans of the franchise can rest easy knowing that there are still plenty of projects in the pipeline for one of geekdom's most beloved properties.
