Taron Egerton is flying high as Elton John in first official Rocketman image

Within the last few months, we’ve gotten some pretty epic for the new rock n’ roll biopic BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY, which centers on the life of rock legend Freddie Mercury. Soon that footage will get a bit of company, because on Monday the first trailer for the Elton John biopic ROCKETMAN will drop, and to give you the smallest of tastes the first official image of Taron Egerton (KINGSMAN) as John has arrived. The man has winged shoes and rocks them like a champ.

About a week ago we some set photos of Egerton as John, sporting a much bigger, curlier haircut and a dapper suit. Here he seems to be in full rock god mode, sporting the gold jacket, diamond laced glasses, and shoes that look like they have flight capabilities. Why he’s on a plane I’ll never know.

Though this seems like a movie that could slip into the awards season race this year it will actually drop on May 31, 2019, providing some much-needed alternative content in yet another summer filled with blockbusters and sequels. In terms of competition, it will go head-to-head with GODZILLA:  KING OF THE MONSTERS, and will be sandwiched between the releases of Disney’s ALADDIN (May 24) and SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2 (June 7).

ROCKETMAN is an epic musical fantasy about the uncensored human story of Sir Elton John’s breakthrough years, starring Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell, Richard Madden and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Assembling all the images we've seen of Egerton as John into a more complete picture I have to say I'm anxious to see how he brings it all to life in the first trailer. He'll likely show off his singing chops (as he did in the animated movie SING), but playing John is also about harnessing his charisma, and like with Rami Malek in RHAPSODY I think we can expect a transformative, rousing performance.
