Quentin Tarantino says The Hateful Eight is the “funniest snow Western” ever

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

THE HATEFUL EIGHT is headed to San Diego Comic Con very soon with the promise of new footage and, hopefully, a full trailer. The release date for the 70mm roadshow presentation is set for Christmas which means it is time for more and more photos and details about Quentin Tarantino's new Western.

Being the cinema nerd that he is, Quentin Tarantino has modeled THE HATEFUL EIGHT off of various Westerns, big and small, both from the big screen and television. In fact, while most Westerns are set in the baking desert climates of the American West and South, THE HATEFUL EIGHT is a snow-covered and cold take on the genre. Tarantino even made a bold proclamation to Entertainment Weekly about where THE HATEFUL EIGHT ranks amongst it's peers.

“I can definitely say that as bleak as our movie is, we are definitely the funniest snow Western ever made,” says Tarantino. “This is funnier than THE GREAT SILENCE, it’s funnier than DAY OF THE OUTLAW.” Okay. But is it funnier than Warren Beatty dying in a snowbank? “Oh, yeah, funnier than MCCABE AND MRS. MILLER.”

Whatever the influences, THE HATEFUL EIGHT looks poised to satisfy fans of DJANGO UNCHAINED by presenting an anachronistic look at the Western genre replete with an all-star cast. In fact, below you will find a brand new image of Kurt Russell and Samuel L. Jackson from the movie. Whether these characters are heroes or villains is all part of Tarantino's plan, inspired by small screen Westerns like BONANZA and THE VIRGINIAN.

“You wait the whole episode to find out, ‘Are they a good guy or are they a bad guy?’ ” he says. “So I thought, ‘What if I did a story that was made up of nothing but those characters?’ So there’s no good guys. There’s no Little Joe.”

I would anticipate another Oscar nomination or two to be headed Tarantino's way if the campaign the Weinsteins are mounting is any indication. Hopefully we will know more come SDCC and you can expect our crack team of JoBlo.com reporters to bring you the news as it breaks.

THE HATEFUL EIGHT debuts in limited 70mm release on December 25th.
