New poll reveals which movie franchises Americans dig the most

A recent survey conducted by Morning Consult and The Hollywood Reporter has revealed which movie franchises Americans want the most. The poll was conducted between the dates of November 8-11 among 2,201 U.S. adults, and the results … will likely not surprise most of you.

While several movie franchises were listed as a part of the study, it was established that 71% of those who participated said that they're excited for a new BACK TO THE FUTURE film, most of all. While working our way down the list, we've come to discover that TOY STORY came in at 69%, while INDIANA JONES measured at 68%, with JURASSIC PARK earning 67% and SHREK at 65%. Coming in toward the bottom of the pile is the TWILIGHT franchise, which only 40% of those polled saying they'd like to see another installment of the sparkling vampire drama.

If you're curious about the age factor for some of these results, the survey shows that TOY STORY, with (82%) of those polled wanting another installment, was most popular among young adults age 18-29. No surprise there, really. Especially when you consider that many of those folks grew up watching the TOY STORY franchise from the very beginning. I myself saw TOY STORY in theaters, and I'll gladly watch a sequel so long as Pixar keeps cranking them out. Next on the list of examples was the JURASSIC PARK franchise (79%), which had polled the best among frequent movie watchers.

Below you'll find a few more results from the survey:

• Somewhat intuitively, the films with the highest likelihood for viewership are also the series with the highest favorability
• Most (54%) of the public has watched all of the "Back to the Future" series.
• Nearly half have watched all of the "Toy Story" (47%), "Indiana Jones" (47%) and "Shrek" (43%) series
• 92% of young adults have seen all or some of the "Toy Story" and "Shrek" series
• Comparatively, just 36% of the public has seen all the "Star Wars" films

As the study went on, contributors were then asked about the future of the James Bond franchise. In looking at the results, the survey revealed that 52% of those polled support the idea of a black actor assuming the role of James Bond. Meanwhile, 39% offered their support for a Hispanic Bond, an Asian Bond 37%, a female Bond also at 37%, and a gay James Bond polling at 28%.

Here are some of the other highlights from the James Bond portion of the poll:

• Women are more supportive of a racial minority Bond than they are of a female Bond
• Republicans are divided on supporting (39%) or opposing (40%) a black James Bond. Half or more Republicans oppose other racial minority Bonds and a female or gay Bond. Democrats are more supportive of a non-white-male Bond than Republicans are, but divided on a gay Bond (41% support, 40% oppose)
• 63% support rumored Bond actor Idris Elba for the role

As we continue to investigate the James Bond franchise, the report also proclaims that America's favorite Bond actor is the legendary Sean Connery, with Pierce Brosnan coming in at a close second.

While some of the results of this survey might surprise you, I think it's important to keep in mind that a mere 2,201 U.S. adults participated in the study. In other words, this is not an accurate representation of the majority of the American public, but rather a blip on a very large map. To clarify, the interviews were conducted online and the data were weighted to approximate a target sample based on age, race/ethnicity, gender, educational attainment, and region. Lastly, the margin of error for the results is +/-2 percentage points.
