Netflix open to more Marvel shows, says any character could get a spin-off

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Marvel’s partnership with Netflix has been quite the success as both Daredevil and Jessica Jones have proven to be a hit with Marvel fans. Daredevil already has a new season on the way, Jessica Jones was recently renewed for a second season, and with Luke Cage in production, Iron Fist and The Defenders on the way, and a rumoured Daredevil spin-off focusing on The Punisher, I think it’s safe to say that Marvel and Netflix’s partnership will continue onwards.

Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos spoke at the Television Critics Association press tour over the weekend, and while he didn’t mention the rumoured Punisher spin-off, he did say that it’s possible that any of the Marvel television characters could get their own spin-off.

Any character that’s in there is on the table … It’s always possible. All the characters in the universe could also spin out.

However, you shouldn’t expect to see a sudden flood of Marvel shows popping up on Netflix, Sarandos says that due to the large scale of these productions, they want to make sure they don’t stretch themselves too thin.

Right now, these are produced at the scale of a major film, so there are long production times and long post times. In some cases, when we have character crossover, it makes it more difficult to manage production. It’s not the goal to put out more than one or two out a year.

It’s nice to hear that they’re going to restrain themselves, both Daredevil and Jessica Jones were such promising beginnings to the Marvel/Netflix partnership that it’d be a shame to see them (and others) suffer due to Marvel biting off more than they can chew. The second season of Daredevil will premiere on Netflix on March 18, 2016.

Which Marvel/Netflix television characters would you like to see get a spin-off?
