Like it’s cinematic universe, Marvel’s role in the TV world is growing stronger and stronger by the day, like some geeky, radioactive happiness monster. They’ve got their Netflix shows (DAREDEVIL, JESSICA JONES,etc.) as well as network shows (AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. and the upcoming INHUMANS and CLOAK AND DAGGER show). Now their plan for global domination has taken another step, as Marvel has just announced another show for its ever-growing slate. And this time, things are gonna get silly.
THR got the exclusive that Marvel is partnering up with Freefrom again (who will air DAGGER) to work on a new show, NEW WARRIORS. The show is to be the brand's first 30-minute comedy series, centering on a group six young folk who are discovering their abilities, and will use them to save the world. The leader of the group will be the well-known character Squirrel Girl (a.k.a. Doreen Green), who has the powers of a squirrel and is described as a tough, natural leader. Kevin Biegel of SCRUBS and COUGAR TOWN is near a deal to write the script for the 10-episode series and work as showrunner.
The subjects at the center of WARRIORS will all be known as “becomers”, young people learning how to handle their abilities while also juggling first romances, first jobs, etc. Some time ago Anna Kendrick said she would be interested in playing the character of Green, the resulting effect being a perfect, undisturbed, 10-day-long world peace. With this series we can kiss those dreams goodbye, as the show sounds like it will cast people near (or look like) their teens, and Marvel has yet to use characters both in their TV and cinematic universes, like the DC universe is doing.
Marvel head of TV, Jeph Loeb, had these nice things to say:
Marvel's New Warriors have always been fan favorites and now particularly with the addition of Squirrel Girl, they are Marvel Television favorites as well. After the amazing experience we've had with Freeform on Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger we can't think of a better place for our young heroes.
Aside from the Netflix shows I haven’t really caught any of the other Marvel shows. S.H.I.E.L.D. I stopped watching after season one purely out of laziness, and AGENT CARTER seemed like fun, till it was cancelled. I don’t know if I’ll fit WARRIORS into my slate, but a 30-minute comedy could be easier to swallow than an hour-a-week action drama. It could be a fun little show, and though I think fans would want Squirrel Girl in the MCU, a TV show is better suited for a character of her…uniqueness. I don’t think talking to squirrels needs a $150 million budge, anyway.
The show is planning on a 2018 release. Get crackin, folks.
