Let the games begin! And go on forever. There was a meeting with Lionsgate investors today, or an "earnings call" if you want to get boring about it, where the studio talked about plans for franchises now that The Hunger Games series is set to end this year with THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 2. The studio obviously wants to keep the lucrative property going so it's was not a real surprise that their CEO Jon Feltheimer said that they are "actively looking at some development and thinking about prequel and sequel possibilities" for the franchise.
Lionsgate also mentioned that they were interested in what Warner Bros. Pictures is doing with the HARRY POTTER franchise, that being the upcoming FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM movies. It makes financial sense to try and continue the series considering each of the last two movies in the franchise were the highest grossing film of that year. The final film later this year could top them all, leaving many suits wondering how to keep that success going. They had a little stretch there by splitting the last book into two movies, another page out of the Warner Bros./Potter playbook.
From an audience member’s perspective, I could easily see a prequel to The Hunger Games; Game #1 happened at some point didn't it? What about how it all came to be in the first place? I'd watch that. Author Suzanne Collins might even have a few other stories to share with the studio as well, making fans and ticket holders more confident in any future projects. Sure go for it.
Also, in case you missed it, Lionsgate announced this morning that THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 2 will get an IMAX 3D release and that The Hunger Games: The Exhibition will open on July 1st at Discovery Times Square in New York City.
What do you think about more Hunger Games movies? Would you prefer a prequel or sequel?
