Joss Whedon says Ultron will be “everything a robot never is” in Avengers 2

Director Joss Whedon was recently interviewed by Empire, where he talked a little about the titular villain appearing in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, and commented on how each new character plays an important part in his film.

Whedon starts by saying the new characters in AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON like Baron Von Strucker (Thomas Kretschmann), Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) serve a purpose, and are necessary for the story he is trying to tell.

I fiercely dislike the idea of just throwing in more people for the sake of doing that. But last time I had all of Earth's Mightiest Heroes versus one British character actor, and I needed more conflict.

The director continues by saying he's having a lot of fun with James Spader's Ultron.

I'm having a blast with Ultron. He's not a creature of logic – he's a robot who's genuinely disturbed. We're finding out what makes him menacing and at the same time endearing and funny and strange and unexpected, and everything a robot never is.

Whedon also says he has enjoyed filming AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON in the U.K.

The number of different looks and textures and moods we're getting from the British locations is stupid awesome. because this, palette-wise, is very different. I'm trying to make a different film. Because why would you make one movie twice? That seems weird.

Production is currently underway on AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, and I'm sure we'll be hearing plenty more from Joss Whedon as he continues working on the final Phase Two film for Marvel.

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON also stars Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Paul Bettany and Samuel L. Jackson, and will be in theaters on May 1st, 2015.
