Javier Bardem in talks to voice the new bad guy in Despicable Me 2

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

After his Oscar-winning performance in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, every film wanted Javier Bardem to play their villain. There was BOND 23, STAR TREK 2 and CLASH OF THE TITANS 2 who were all making plays for the actor’s services. But Bardem has decided on a sequel that’s a little more kid-friendly. The actor is in talks to voice El Macho, the lead villain in DESPICABLE ME 2.

Not much is known about the plot of the film other than Steve Carell’s Gru and his adopted daughters will face off against Macho and his bad-guy-in-waiting son El Machito. Bardem is the first new voice actor to join the cast, which will see most of the voice actors return (with the exception, I’m guessing, of Jason Segel if a new villain is on-board).

Bardem recently finished a supporting role in Terrence Malick’s upcoming film and still could be, possibly, maybe be starring in BOND 23. DESPICABLE ME 2 would be the first time he’s lent his voice to an animated film.

DESPICABLE ME 2, which needs a catchy subtitle, will again be directed by duo Pierre Coffin and Chris Renaud.
