Ian McKellen is bringing his gravitas to one of the most iconic characters in literature, Sherlock Holmes. In Bill Condon's (DREAMGIRLS, GODS AND MONSTERS) latest film, MR. HOLMES, we follow a long-retired Holmes living in a Sussex village with his housekeeper and rising detective son in 1947. Sherlock finds himself haunted by an unsolved 50-year old case and given that Holmes' memory isn't what it used to be, he only remembers fragments of a mystery that he seeks to solve. You can check out the first trailer for this character-driven film below.
The music in the trailer went from background noise to overbearing pretty quickly, but that minor qualm aside, MR. HOLMES looks like a hell of a vehicle for Ian McKellen. If there's any man who could command the screen as a aged Sherlock Holmes, it would be him. Director Bill Condon looks like he's lending some serious class to the proceedings, so I'll be looking forward to checking this out once it gets a US release date.
MR. HOLMES will hit theaters sometime this year.
