After all of the nightmare stories involving the troubled production and delays on the set of WORLD WAR Z, the question everyone has been asking is whether or not the movie is going to be any good. First, the movie was over-budget, then they called in Damon Lindelof to fix the final act of the movie, and then there was talk of director Marc Forster and star/producer Brad Pitt refusing to work together on set. All of this on top of fans crying foul that the integrity of Max Brooks oral history format was sacrificed to make an action movie that shared little to nothing in common with the source material.
So, as screenings are underway, fan and critical reaction has begun to pour in and the verdict is? The movie is pretty good! Now, a lot of these are celebrities who are not likely to trash a potential Hollywood connection in Brad Pitt, but even the non-elite are saying the movie is fun. Check out some of their reactions:
Just saw World War Z. Sooo much better than World War A-Y. #WorldWarZ

World War Z: a big, solid zombie movie. Makes up for in scope what it lacks in blood.

So after all that fuss, ‘World War Z’ turned out to be a surprisingly effective zombie thriller.

World War Z will probably be the most intense movie you will see this summer…I was shocked it was that good. So much for those re-shoots.

So, was World War Z exactly like the book? No, but I felt it captured much of the flavor, and man, does it have some intense sequences.

I saw World War Z tonight. It was NOT the book. But it was INCREDIBLY anxiety-inducing despite having flaws in the denoument. But!

Saw World War Z. Not at all the disaster it’s been made out to be. It’s entertaining and will do fine. So there, negative buzz,

World War Z is unreal. A great film. Was totally stressed out from start to finish

I will reserve judgement until I hear from our own Chris Bumbray or JimmyO, but this sounds a hell of a lot better than where I was imagining the movie was headed. Maybe we will end up getting a decent summer movie out of it after all.
WORLD WAR Z, starring Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale, Bryan Cranston, David Morse, and Matthew Fox opens on June 21, 2013.
