Dwayne Johnson to star in the military horror action movie Seal Team 666

Dwayne Johnson cut his teeth on cheesy action movies like THE SCORPION KING, THE RUNDOWN and DOOM. He has since moved on to bigger budget cheesy movies like G.I. JOE: RETALIATION and the FAST AND FURIOUS sequels. His next project, Brett Ratner‘s HERCULES: THE THRACIAN WARS could be the start to a new franchise. With Johnson’s name attached or rumored to be joining lots of other projects, hearing a concrete link to a movie with a premise like SEAL TEAM 666 is welcome news.

The Hollywood Reporter says the man formerly known as The Rock will join the cast of the military action movie with a horror twist. SEAL TEAM 666 is based on the novel by Weston Ochse and was adapted for the screen by HERCULES: THE THRACIAN WARS scribe Evan Spiliotopoulos.

The project follows an elite group of Navy Seals who battle demons and assorted threats and discover that there’s a greater supernatural force bent on destroying the world.

There is no word on any directors or other castmembers who may be joining SEAL TEAM 666, but the plot has promise. But, with a concept like this, the film could end up being another R.I.P.D. which as we all know didn’t turn out so well.

As has been said many times before, I like Dwayne Johnson as an actor and he certainly has the ability to pull off some really cool projects, but so far he has just released average projects. I am waiting for the big deal film that will show the world that he is capable of being a top tier star who can carry a movie like this on his own. Johnson does have great comic timing, so I wouldn’t be opposed to this film taking a GHOSTBUSTERS approach to the material, but I would love a dark, gritty ALIENS meets MEN IN BLACK type movie.
