Every actor in the world wants to work with Steven Spielberg. If they say they don’t they’re lying and shouldn’t be trusted. Luckily that isn’t the case for twelve lucky performers who will round out the cast for Sir Stevie’s newest film about the Pentagon Papers – THE PAPERS. These folks can indeed be trusted.
Formerly known as THE POST, the official cast has been unveiled by Variety with the all-star list including Sarah Paulson, Bob Odenkirk, Matthew Rhys, Bradley Whitford, Carrie Coon, Jesse Plemons, – * deep inhale * – David Cross, Alison Brie, Bruce Greenwood, Tracy Letts, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Zach Woods. The cast will join leads Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep in film which is set to get a limited release on December 22 and will expand on January 12, 2018.
Centering on Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks) and publisher Kay Graham’s (Streep) efforts to force the government to allow them to publish the Pentagon Papers in 1971, THE PAPERS was announced earlier this year and has been hurried into production for the sake of making this year’s awards cycle. It will make that date, and with this cast at its back it will march in to take home every prize it can.
Like most sane folks I love me some Spielberg, and he has a particular knack for historical biopics. His last two, BRIDGE OF SPIES and LINCOLN, both snagged Best Picture noms at the Oscars, with the latter being one of his highest-grossing movies in years. He’ll probably do an equally masterful job here like he did with those films, creating a timely, engaging and entertaining period drama. This cast of new and veteran actors alike is terrific, and together they will form a super Oscar-winning team that will unlock the secrets of moviemaking…and friendship! It's a very diverse group, so they'll get a lot done.
Catch THE PAPERS in limited release December 22 and then wide on January 12, 2018.
