Just the other day, I was sitting around and wondering how it was that “Jem and the Holograms” managed to escape the cartoons-adapted-to-movies trend. I assumed that JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS might’ve killed it for any future movies based on female-led cartoon rock bands but it turns out I might have been premature. (BTW, don’t spend too much time wondering why I was sitting around thinking about “Jem.”)
The truly, truly, truly outrageous rock star is making a big comeback at Hasbro that will include a new toy line and the possibility of a live-action movie. Why now? Well first, Hasbro is flush with cash after the successes of both TRANSFORMERS and GI JOE. Second, it turns out the rights to the property were tied up in legal red tape until 2008 and now that they belong solely to Hasbro, they’re moving forward with a revival.
If you’re unfamiliar with “Jem,” I suggest you take a listen to this classic theme song. The plot was very Hannah Montana-esque with a girl living a double life as a glamorous rock star. Most of the drama revolved around the rival rock back The Misfits who look to upstage the Holograms and steal their glory. (Spoiler alert: it never works.)
