The last time we heard anything close to official about a ZOMBIELAND sequel was in 2014, when it was announced that the film was indeed moving forward with original helmer Ruben Fleischer and writer Dave Callaham (THE EXPENDABLES). Obviously, things have not progressed as some of us might have hoped. But all hope is not lost yet, as this appears to be one of those projects that simply refuses to die. We’re going to be hearing about ZOMBIELAND 2 until Jesse Eisenberg is 50-years-old.
In a recent interview to promote their mega-hit DEADPOOL, screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick revealed that the sequel is indeed still in development.
It’s actually still in development at Sony, they’ve had a couple writers take a crack at it, we’re still exec producers and we’re guiding and helping where we can and I think there’s still very much talk about it, but I think it has to be right,” Reese stressed. “I think all the actors and [original ‘Zombieland’ director] Ruben [Fleischer], all feel like there’s no reason to do it again if we’re not getting it exactly right.”
Even while the Amazon pilot for Zombieland crashed and burned (remember that thing?), there could be renewed interest in the title thanks to DEADPOOL’s success; Reese and Wernick are likely the most in-demand scribes in Hollywood at the moment. If a rising tide lifts all boats, perhaps the writers can convince Sony to really get cracking on Z2 and allow us to catch up with Tallahassee, Columbia, Little Rock and Wichita.
