Grindhouse divided Feb. 21, 2007
Source: Variety   by: Dave Davis

The vile rumor that GRINDHOUSE might not make it to theaters in its original double-feature format has circulated for months (after all, Tarantino just recently finished filming), but all indication is that we'll get the twin injection of exploitation as intended.

However, that may not be a universal (or global) truth. The non-English speaking territories of this planet's surface may in fact get two entirely separate flicks (theoretically titled GRINDHOUSE: PLANET TERROR and GRINDHOUSE: DEATH PROOF) released several months apart.

The rationale, aside from the inevitable (and probably safe) assumption of Weinstein greed, is that other parts of the world have no familiarity with the double-bill experience, so the whole "grindhouse" premise would be as foreign to them as Americans think they are. Bonus for being foreign: additional footage will potentially be added to fill up running time. However, bilingual areas such as Montreal and parts of Canada won't be getting any release of the film at all. Just kidding, boss!

Extra Tidbit: For those who play the numbers game, the finished cost of the total GRINDHOUSE package is reported as $53 million. So far it looks like we're getting our money's worth...

I asked about this last month and the Finnish distributor said that they're (at the time) releasing the film as a whole. I hope they stay in that decision.

GAH! This defeats a lot of the initial purpose. Would I pay to see each of those movies? Hell yes! Would I like it? Hell no!

My heart stopped when I read that Montreal wouldn't get Grindhouse AT ALL! Damn you for that joke!

REALLY KIND OF DUMB...
...to do such a thing, as the whole point of the project, as I remember hearing about it, was to bring the "Grindhouse Experience" to a generation of people who never had that experience. I could be wrong, but I'm willing to bet the number of people who have had that experience are vastly out numbered by those who haven't, even in the USA. Sort of like roller skating rinks of old, or even drive in theaters. Hopefully RR & QT have enough weight behind them to squash this stupid idea. As for doing it on a special edition DVD release and adding extra footage to make two seperate movies, sort of like what Rodriguez did on the Sin City SE, now that could be cool, as long as you also get the theatrical release as part of the package. By the way, the final poster looks BADASSSS!

BULLSH*T
This is BS, fans of Tarantino and Robert rodriguez are passionated moviegoers, not your average teen. Therefore even if we never had a Grindhouse tradition in our country we certainly heard of it, at least since these project was anounced.

2 movies is better than one, but paying twice the money for the same thing is not.
