Earth Stood Still posters Jul. 23, 2008
Source: Fox
by: Dave Davis

I'm not sure if the new teaser poster for the remake of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is meant to address any rumors that destructive device Gort wouldn't appear in the update, but that image certainly seems pretty Gortlike.

As with the 1951 cautionary classic, the new version involves an alien envoy who warns Earth's denizens to cut the crap or face the wrath, with Keanu Reeves playing (?) an emotionless extraterrestrial instructing mankind to chill, brah. THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE director Scott Derrickson tries to get audiences to love the planet in between impressive FX sequences. Here's a clean look at the original teaser poster as well.

Extra Tidbit: The original movie is, of course, the source of the phrase "Klaatu Barada Nikto", which has appeared in ARMY OF DARKNESS and numerous other films.

HMM . . . .
Scott Derrickson is an odd and rather random choice for directing a remake to such a classic. None of his previous work has exactly been great (though I found The Exorcism of Emily Rose quite interesting). I am glad to see a dude from Biola University make the big time, though.

NO...
The original is an all-time classic by the great and late Robert Wise (The haunting, best haunted house movie of all time). To add explosions and stuff won't make this pointless remake worthwile. Next!

Trailer looked good, posters look good and Jennifer Connelly looks good. This should be a fine ditty.

TRAVESTY.
It's like remaking Citizen Kane. Gort from the first one has more emotion than Keanu Reeves.
