Bugs, Daffy and Wile E. Coyote returning to theaters in 3D shorts

Back in 2007, Walt Disney decided to relaunch the concept of animated shorts before their films with some classic Disney characters. (Here’s an example: “How to Hook Up Your Home Theater”) But while Pixar seems to be continuing that tradition, the classic Disney shorts haven’t been continued. But now Warner Bros. is looking to bring back some of their classic characters for theatrical animated shorts.

Warner Bros. Animation will debut “Coyote Falls,” a 3D animated short starring Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner this summer attached to CATS AND DOGS 2. There are three other shorts currently in development and an additional three have been greenlit. While this should be great news, nothing in the recent catalog of Looney Tunes animation has been even remotely entertaining. Luckily, this is something that WB Animation is all too aware of.

“The bar had gone so low that we could only go up,” Executive Vice President of WB Animation Sam Register told the New York Times. They’re taking this time with these shorts and spending a decent amount of money on them as well.

I’m slightly geeky when it comes to Looney Tunes so I’ll reserve judgment until I see more but I do think it was smart to start off with a Wile E. Coyote cartoon. They’re usually the easiest to replicate because there are no voices.

I’m definitely wary of using 3D and CGI to hark back to a classic era of animation but at least their heart is in the right place. I just hope this pops up online eventually so I don’t have to go see CATS AND DOGS 2…
