"Horror" Synopsis

July 31, 2001

Source: The Arrow

Dante Tomaselli sent me this official "Horror" synopsis and here it is for you to dig in:

Within a feverish 77-minute running time, director Dante Tomaselli manages to merge two disturbing storylines into this visually arresting chiller. The first involves a band of five teens that escape from a drug rehabilitation center to cash in on a questionable promise of salvation from the psychopathic Reverend Salo Jr. (Vincent Lamberti). Leader of the pack Luck(Danny Lopes), fueled on major hallucinogens, transports the gang to the reverend's isolated house where the basis of the second plot has been set simultaneously. Here lives Grace (Lizzy Mahon), Salo Jr.'s daughter, whom he and his equally bizarre wife (Christie Sanford) have enslaved through enforced drug addiction and psychic brainwashing. Grace's only salvation appears to be by the guidance of her paternal grandfather Reverend Salo Sr.(The Amazing Kreskin). But this hope is quickly jeopardized when it becomes revealed that his comforting visitations may be being made from beyond the grave. Regardless, it is through Grace's visions involving him that she learns of her parent's demonic pastimes, which include abduction, murder, and possibly worse. Shortly after the arrival of the rehab escapees, Luck shoots and kills Salo Jr. and his wife. This eruption of bloody violence becomes the catalyst for the unleashing of dark forces. These include a torture scene in a chamber of horrors, and murderous attacks by demonic manifestation in the forms of a satanic goat and an army of zombies. But in Tomaselli's nightmarish universe, nothing is what it seems. For by the time of the film's conclusion, the narrative is left deliberately ambiguous and capable of withstanding several interpretations - all of them darkly nihilistic, but nonetheless intriguing.

Savini's next projects

July 31, 2001

Source: Savini.com

Makeup master Tom Savini will be working on two new films in the upcoming months. The first is the John Carl Buechler-directed "Folklore" which starts filming in September. The film will use the old 80's horror mold of "one over-the-top event occurring one sequence after the other, each one topping the last". After that comes "Somewhere in Pittsburgh" with Savini playing a guy who kills vampires. Savini describes the character as a "Sex machine type of role". "Somewhere in Pittsburgh" will be made by the same people who did his upcoming "Web of Darkness" movie. Savini recently completed makeup work on the upcoming Bundy Bio-pic and will most likely be involved in the upcoming George Romero pic "The Assasination" so far starring Anthony Quinn, Ed Harris, and...ahem... Ricky Martin. Check out the poster for "Web of Darkness" here.

Less Rebecca in "Rollerball"

July 31, 2001

Source: Empire Online

Sorry guys! Empire Online reports that test audiences for John McTiernan's "Rollerball", were so critical of the movie it's been sent back to the editing room. MGM insiders say that the film will be severely pruned in an effort both to raise ratings and to ensure the film gets an all-important PG-13 rating. In particular - a full frontal nude shot of Rebecca Romijn-Stamos and other violent scenes will soon be hitting the cutting room floor. The film has now been pushed back to Spring 2002. "I want the time to set this up right," commented MGM's President of theatrical marketing and distribution. "In marketing terms, I want to do things with the film that are different than what has been done to date."

Source: Comics2Film

Showtime Networks has officially green lit the comic book adaptation "Jeremiah" for 2002. "Jeremiah" is based on Platinum Studios' award-winning graphic novel series by Belgian author Hermann Huppen. Luke Perry and Malcolm-Jamal Warner have signed on to star in the 20 episode series with Russell Mulcahy (Highlander) directing the two-hour premiere. According to Comics2film: "Jeremiah" is set in a future post-apocalyptic world where, almost a decade before, a deadly virus wiped out the world's adult population sparing only those who haven't reached puberty. Now in their 20s, the oldest survivors include Jeremiah (Perry) and the colorful but cynical Kurdy (Warner). Jeremiah is on a personal quest to relocate a mysterious place called Valhalla, which his father claimed might hold some hope for the survivors. As Jeremiah falls into a reluctant partnership with Kurdy, both explore new areas and encounter other groups of young adults who are divided into rival social groups. In the course of the season opener, Jeremiah's smaller personal quest is redirected when he discovers a group of highly organized survivors who want to enlist him to orchestrate peace among the warring factions and to try and prevent the killer virus from returning.

Fresh from "Planet of the Apes" I caught the trailer for "Joy Ride", a film starring Steve Zahn, Leelee Sobieski, and Paul Walker. All I can say about this trailer is WOW!!! Coming Attractions provides a glimpse of the poster and some great stills here. And, you can check out the official website for the film here. "Joy Ride" is scheduled to come out September 21st.

"Arac Attack" Rocks?

July 27, 2001

Source: Aint-it-cool

Early reviews coming in on the upcoming David Arquette project "Arac Attack" are surprisingly...positive. Very positive in fact. I always hate to get my hopes up (thus I generally go to movies expecting the worst) however, a scooper at aint-it-cool wrote in with a pretty decent, and spoiler-free commentary on the film. In fact, it makes me very very curious to see the thing now. Check out the report here.

Lara Flynn Boyle in MIB2

July 27, 2001

Source: Moviehole

Lara Flynn Boyle has stepped up to the plate to fill the shoes previously filled by Famke Jannsen for "Men In Black 2". Boyle is reportedly being prepped by Columbia at present. Janssen spent only one day on set filming the role as the movie's villain, Serleena, only to step down when a family member became ill. This is majorly bad news...in my opinion.

Buscemi and Oldman team up

July 27, 2001

Source: Ananova

Gary Oldman and Steve Buscemi are reportedly teaming up for a new thriller. The two are expected to play murderous kidnappers who go on a rampage in "Macabre". The film is based on director William Castle's 1958 film which starred William Prince and Jim Backus. In the original version, Castle used a publicity gimmick to draw in customers by insuring audience members against death from fear while watching his movie. The plot follows the two men on a small-town killing spree before they kidnap a doctor's daughter played by Rachael Leigh Cook. Filming is due to begin in the fall.

No Liu in "Kill Bill"?

July 27, 2001

Source: Aint-it-cool

Despite rumors recently that Lucy Liu would be up to replace Uma Thurman in Quentin Tarantino's next flick "Kill Bill", it is not happening...at least for now it's not. Harry at aint-it-cool spoke to some of the folks near and dear to the project and has de-bunked this rumor as just a rumor. The film is about a prostitute (Thurman) who, after being shot by her pimp Bill (Warren Beatty), ends up in a coma for nine years. She wakes up pissed off and sets out to seek revenge.

Tomb Raider star/villain Lain Glen spoke with Empire Online about his upcoming project "The Darkness". Lain plays father to the character played by Anna Paquin, and husband to Lena Olin's "Maria". "We are an American family out in the sticks, and we are drawn back to Europe where I left when I was 7. It’s a psychological horror. We are an innocent family who are taken back to demons, that we had forgotten existed, which start to come out of the walls." Supernatural "Panic Room"?

July 13, 2001

Source: 13th Street

13th Street has an eyewitness' account of the filming of a scene for David Fincher's upcoming thriller "The Panic Room". The premise (relayed from a crew member) of the movie: young woman and her daughter, hiding in a secret "panic" room, while robbers look for them. But according to the crew member their eyewitness spoke to, the panic room was made by a mobster and somehow it acts like a "wrinkle in reality". This is the first time any supernatural aspect of this project as been mentioned. Previously we were led to believe that the panic room was supposed to be some kind of hidden room, but not something that can disappear or appear, which is what this eyewitness says it can do.

One Hour Photo Delivers

July 13, 2001

Source: Upcoming Movies and Aint-it-cool

I was just thinking about this film the other day and low and behold I see an early review that looks very very positive! Robin Williams stars in "One Hour Photo" as a guy who works in this photo shop and in some cases pays a little more attention to the photos than perhaps he should. Anyways, check out the review here. You can also checkout some good pics of Robin Williams as "Sy" the photo guy here. This movie has a great cast (Connie Nielsen, Michael Vartan, Gary Cole, Erin Daniels, Eriq La Salle and more) and looks to be something good for the fall of 2001!

Legend of the Chupacabra

July 12, 2001

Source: Creature Corner

Looks like the next project for Joe Roth (director of the upcoming "America’s Sweethearts") and his new company Revolution Studios will be about the legend of the Chupacabra. Writer Ravel Centeno-Rodriguez ("The Thirteenth Floor") has signed on to put together a story. Ryan at Creature-Corner provided some background on the whole Chupacandra thing: "somewhere in Puerto Rico, a nasty monster roams the countryside slaughtering goats and other farm animals". My guess is someone bumps into ole Chupacandra...The film will (so far) be called "Bloodlust: Legend of the Chupacabra". The film will be produced by William Sherak, Jason Shuman (under their Blue Star Pictures company), and John Hegeman (of DistantCorners.com).

Marilyn Manson is From Hell

July 11, 2001

Source: NME

Marilyn Manson has officially confirmed his involvement in the new Johnny Depp thriller "From Hell". Manson told www.launch.com "What happened was they had hired a conventional composer who did most of the work, and I had come to the project late. They wanted me to lend my aesthetic; they were trying to get him to compose conventional music, but with, as if he were me. And then I met them and they were, 'Oh, we wish we had got you from the beginning'... So what I did was I took things they already had and I changed them slightly and I added a lot of sounds that didn't distract from the film but make things more intense, whatever they're trying to achieve. And that was really enjoyable for me". Manson will also record a song for the closing credits of the film.

The film is about a camera crew that goes on location to film a commercial. They are based on the side of a mountain on the Yogoslav border, and very near the hideout of Serbian War Criminal Slobodan Pavle. Pavle, (who faked his death in a plane crash to escape prosecution for war crimes) is inadvertently filmed by a member of the crew. When Pavle and his men discover this, they go after the crew assuming they are CIA. One member of the crew is taken hostage and a chase ensues through the remote mountains.
