Source: Aint-it-cool News
Poor Leelee Sobieski, the girl is finally coming into her own, does a few movies over a few years and what happens? all the films end up being released pretty much back to back. Most recently was the not so great GLASSHOUSE, next up is what sounds to be a pretty cool JOYRIDE. Capone over at
Aint-it-cool had the chance to take in the film and provide his own critique. His review doesn't give away anymore of the movie then the trailer has already but if you haven't seen the trailer then I would recommend staying away from the review. Just know that it sounds pretty
freaking cool! If you want to read about it, do it here.

This is totally unconfirmed, but a scooper checked in at
aint-it-cool to report that there IS a sequel to SLEEPAWAY CAMP in the works right now. No
filming has started yet. Reportedly, the movie will have a cameo (and death?) of Lil Romeo. The director is a fellow New Englander who is featured on the audio commentary to the DVD (no name was given). The budget is supposed to be three million and Robert Hiltzik is working on the script. File this under totally unconfirmed...

The film is set on an island off the Florida coast where a bunch of multi-ethnic college coeds show up for a rave, only to discover the rather monstrous inhabitants of the island including an evil entity in a large house. The aim is to follow the game's gory detail. The project is aiming for a possible release sometime next fall/winter.

Sadly, Victor Wong passed away on Monday. Wong played a wide, wide range of characters from the creepy old man in THE GOLDEN CHILD to the
shopkeeper in TREMORS, to Egg Shen in BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA (arguably the character he is best known for). He will be missed.

Rumor has it that a
"prequel" to Beettlejuice is in the works. It would be called
"Beetledeuce". The site states that Michael Keaton isn't
involved and that Tim Burton isn't listed as the film's director. I don't
really see the point then...can you spell "Straight To Video"?
Thanks to Clint Morris at moviehole.net for the heads up.

| RIP Samuel Arkoff
|
September 18,
2001 |
|
Source: CNN
Samuel Arkoff, a true Hollywood maverick, died on
Sunday at the age of 83. Arkoff was best known for such classics as DRESSED TO KILL, THE AMITYVILLE HORROR, and I WAS A TEEN-AGE WEREWOLF. Arkoff's production company
AIP, can in many ways be held responsible for the initial success of such directors as Martin
Scorsese, Francis Coppola, Woody Allen, Ivan Reitman and Brian De Palma and actors Robert De
Niro, Jack Nicholson, Bruce Dern, Peter Fonda and Melanie Griffith. Arkoff lived by such mottoes as "Thou shalt not put too much money into one picture," and "With the money you do spend, put it on the screen. Don't waste it on the egos of actors or nonsense that might appeal to highbrow critics." May he rest in peace.

The website for the upcoming INSOMNIA is now up and
rearing to go. I have to say this is a film I am really looking forward to! What a cast: Al
Pacino, Robin Williams and Hilary Swank. The story revolves around a detective who becomes compromised during a murder investigation in an Alaskan small town when he winds up accidentally killing his partner and being blackmailed by the person he originally came there to investigate. Williams will be playing the killer who blackmails Pacino's cop. There's not a lot on the website at the moment but hopefully it will progress. Anyways, check it out

Source: Cinema Confidential
Pendragon Pictures announced yesterday that production on the WAR OF THE WORLDS remake has been brought to a halt, and that the future of the project remains in doubt. The press release reads as follows:
Pendragon Pictures announces that, due to many story similarities of their production of WAR OF THE WORLDS to the tragic and horrific events surrounding the World Trade Center attack, production is forced to go on hiatus. For at least one to two weeks the principles at Pendragon Pictures will assess the project's potential effects on the spirit of the world.
WAR OF THE WORLDS direct Timothy Hines comments, "I don't, in any way, wish to potentially contribute to the pain and grief of those affected by this senseless act of terror."
The hearts and condolences of the principles, cast and crew of Pendragon Pictures' WAR OF THE WORLDS go out to all of those who are suffering from this loss.

I have to agree with the boys at Creature Corner in that this is some VERY good news, not to mention one of the top reasons to see
HELLBOY. Rick Baker recently told Smilin' Jack Ruby that he's set to work on the effects for the project! This news combined with Vin Diesel's increasing interest in the title role equal a very good thing. No word on production start dates but reportedly once Guillermo del Toro finishes up on BLADE 2, he's set to move right into work on
HELLBOY.

| New ending for MIB 2
|
September 17,
2001 |
|
Source: Cinema Confidential
Among the many films that will be changed due to the World Trace Center tragedy, Cinema Confidential reports that Sony and Columbia Pictures will definitely be changing the ending to MEN IN BLACK 2. The ending for the film was
supposed to take place at the now-diminished World Trade Center.
Despite the fact that a majority of the film was shot during the summer, the studio contends that the final scenes had not been completed. "There was a scene set against the background of the World Trade Center, and given yesterday's tragedy, we are now in the process of looking at alternatives," said a Sony representative.
The rest of the film will also be reviewed, and any scenes featuring the buildings will be replaced.

| Piven as the Toothfairy?
|
September 11,
2001 |
|
Source: Dark Horizons
This whole RED DRAGON remake is getting to be very interesting. Reportedly, actor Jeremy Piven (I love this guy!) recently turned up for a promotional appearance for the John Cusack romance SERENDIPIDTY (in which he has a role) when he stripped off his shirt to reveal a 'red dragon' tattoo and confirmed to the crowd he was about to audition for a juicy role in RED DRAGON. The Toothfairy perhaps?? Piven has worked with the film's director Brett Ratner on his two most recent films (FAMILY MAN and RUSH HOUR II). I think Piven would make a GREAT psycho, though I'm not too sure about the
tattoo thing, sounds a bit too Sean "the psycho" Young'ish. If you recall she walked around for weeks in a cat costume claiming she was clearly the better choice to play catwoman in the BATMAN RETURNS, she also lost the role to Michelle Pfeiffer. Hopefully Mr. Piven doesn't start appearing publicly in a Toothfairy outfit...

| Keanu speaks...finally
|
September 11,
2001 |

Source: Canoe
Keanu Reeves sucked it in and now he finally gets to have his say about that piece'o crap THE WATCHER. Reeves told a Toronto newspaper "I never found that script interesting, but a friend of mine forged my signature on an agreement. "I couldn't prove he did and I didn't want to get sued for not
honoring the contract so I had no other choice but to do the film." Reeves was not allowed to say anything negative about the film for one year. If he had, he would've faced a lawsuit. If you recall, Reeves did not do any publicity for the film and it was clear he was not happy with the project. I don't feel sorry for actors usually at all, but I think Reeves got a raw deal having to do this garbage. What's worse if he hadn't done it he probly would've ended up paying the writers millions in damages a la Kim Basinger and BOXING HELENA, another piece'o crap that practically ruined her not so stellar career...Anyways on the bright side Keanu has also reportedly given up a good percentage of his back-end deal on the upcoming MATRIX sequels. He supposedly gave it up to the costume and set designers claiming they deserved it more than he did.

2001 |
|
Source: 13th Street
Don't hate me, but the plotline to this flick sounds like it could be a gem! Joel Schumacher has reportedly begun negotiations to direct a remake of the Swedish mystery film SLEEPWALKER. The original film, just released last year, was about an ordinary family man who awakes one day to find his wife and children have vanished from the house sometime during the night. As the man tries to find out what happened to his loved ones he uncovers clues that point to him having a double life -- one that he has while sleepwalking. Nicholas Kazan (FALLEN) has written the English adaptation screenplay of Sleepwalker. Mark Johnson (GALAXY QUEST) will produce.

Wong and Morgan will write and produce the picture, which is tentatively scheduled for a 2002 production start. The film will be distributed by Miramax.

| Changes for THE LAST CASTLE
|
September 10,
2001 |
|
Source: Dark Horizons
Some changes ahead for Robert Redford's latest THE LAST CASTLE. This can never be a good thing but let's keep our fingers crossed none the less. *SPOILER ALERT* A scooper over at Dark Horizons reports that apparently Dreamworks wanted a "softer" ending, so a new one was shot at the Veteran's Cemetery in LA recently with one of the main trio of characters attending the funeral of another along with nearly 100 extras in military gear. The studio is very happy with the film in general and it is still expected to open on time. I
dunno, I though Redford had more pull than to conform to those studio execs...hopefully this doesn't mean a major dissappointment for the audience.
