This is not exactly what I was expecting from Edges of Darkness. In fact I'm not so sure I knew what to expect, but with that being said I can certainly claim that this one was one of the most original, crazy and breakneck-paced films I've ever watched.
It's not a perfect film, but it is cut so well and there is just so much insanity going on at one time that it is impossible not to be entertained. Obviously this film was made by lovers of the horror genre, who throw in too many blatant references/homages to count. Most of the meat here comes from zombie stuff, and I really dug it.
The film is truly a labor of love with three separate stories. I liked the zombie one the best, but the vampire one and the warrior one were decent too. Although the dialogue and characters can be a bit absurd, this movie is ambitious and attempts to pay respects to so many different movies (and usually succeeds, too). As I said before, there's a lot of work put into this one.
The movie is low budget though, but every cent was put on screen. There are some great gore effects too. Not everything is rosy though because there are a few big plot holes and the acting isn't all that good, with some lame dialogue thrown in for not so good measure. These are all relatively typical and uniform complaints for independent outings. Some characters are memorable (the kid, for instance, and our Sam Jackson wannabe), but it isn't exactly Shakespeare.
But with all that being said, this movie is a balls to the wall thrillfest that kicks your ass into its seat. It won't hold up against big studio films with better budgets but for my money, it is one of the better independent films I've seen in awhile.

First there is an EPK called Straight Up, which is essentially a trailer with a few comments from cast members, it adds nothing and the comments are superficial.
The next EPK is called Unleashed, and it too is pretty light. The filmmakers are fanboys who are very excited, and hoping that this one will launch their careers. The whole thing runs about 10 minutes and has a few good bits of info, but again the thing is too short to add anything substantial to the mix.
There's also a commentary track with James Horton and his DP Blaine Cade, and it sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom. This was easily the best part of the extras, as it is the most informative, although the guys are a little monotone when they speak.

| Although the DVD isn't stellar, this movie was definitely worth watching and provided me with an hour and a half of entertainment, to say the least. I highly recommend it and it goes on my shortlist of great independent films.
