A new Prisoner Jun. 30, 2008
Source: Variety
by: Dave Davis

We don't cover a lot of TV news, but this merits mention due to the talent involved, and because everyone should be exposed to the original.

AMC and ITV are making a new version of the brilliant British late-60s TV show THE PRISONER, with Jim Caviezel (THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST) stepping into the title role made famous by the wonderfully brusque Patrick McGoohan. Sir Ian McKellan will co-star (as Number Two) in the project, which will will attempt to condense the original cerebral 17-episode run into a six part miniseries.

The ingenious sci-fi mindjob involved a secret agent who, upon handing in his resignation, is abducted and relocated to a strange isolated township known as "the Village". Referred to only as "Number 6", he's given a house and some smart threads, and then gets chased by big white bouncing spheres as he tries to figure out just what the hell he's doing there, never receiving any satisfactory answers.

An updated PRISONER has been discussed/threatened for years by various parties, but this new version will reportedly arrive in 2009 and, while paying homage to the original, "will reflect 21st-century stressors such as constant surveillance and the conflict between liberty and security."

Extra Tidbit: Previous people rumored or involved with a new PRISONER feature or series include Chris Nolan (BATMAN BEGINS), Russell Crowe, Christopher McQuarrie (USUAL SUSPECTS), Simon West (CON AIR) and Christopher Eccleston (DR. WHO).

CHECK YER FACTS, THERE...
First of all, the BBC has been trying to get the show off the ground for the last few years. I'm happy that they've cast Jim Caviezel and Ian McKellan in the TV series.

Christopher Nolan ("Batman Begins") IS still slated to do the movie. It's his next project.

All I know is the original is something of a forgotten classic. Actually, I think had they gone with the idea of an actual film, it could've been the best stand-alone adaptation of a TV show since "The Fugitive," and yet I'm reluctant to see anyone try to tamper with it. Caviezel isn't quite the stoic loner McGoohan was though.

And while Ian McKellen would make a marvelous Number 2, I hope they keep the system of replacing Number 2 every episode or two, because while some of them were less effective than others, it made the show that much more unpredictable.

OH, GOD...
First off, I applaud the casting of Sir Ian as Number Two. That is a role worthy of someone of Ian's stature. Second, apart from him, this is a horrible idea, especially with someone like Cavieziel in the lead. This is a uniquely British program, and it should be stocked with Brits. And God help us if Cavieziel goes for a British accent. This is a show that should not be fucked with. And now it's going to be. Goddamnit.

This is the third time a 'Prisoner' remake has been formally announced in less than a year (previously, it was the Eccleston-starring TV version; then, the Nolan-directed movie version). So I'll believe it when I see it.

However, if they do proceed, I hope that they: [A] keep it subjective and allegorical (would people still be discussing the original as much if it made any literal sense, or had a definitive finale?); and [B] FILM IT IN THE BLOODY HOTEL PORTMEIRION (filming it elsewhere would be like changing the exterior of the Doctor's TARDIS).

But no one will ever do that seething indignation quite as well as McGoohan did.

"This is a unanimously acclaimed masterpiece of television beloved by thousands of fans that cannot be improved in any substantial way.

Let's remake it anyway.
